  • Oops. Missed a CC payment

    What's going to happen?

I didn't miss it because I can't afford to pay it. I normally schedule to pay them (in full) as soon as I check my account and see a due date. For some reason I forgot to schedule to pay it. I noticed it 6 days after it was due and paid it immediately. I was charged a $39 fee and I'm sure it'll be a black mark on an otherwise perfect credit score.

Shouldn't affect your credit score unless its 30 days late or more. But be prepared for the CC company to jack your interest rate.

It depends on the bank. Some see you as the perfect prey and will take full advantage of this opportunity to jack up your rates or hammer you with a ridicoulous fee. I've been a day or two late on my main card and it was basically ignored. I've been a customer in good standing for many years though if that has anything to do with it. I pay in full every month so I wouldn't care if they jacked it up except on principle maybe.

I'm curious about the balance that the $39 was assesed on? Seems like a catch-all # similar to a bounced check.

I would maybe even call the company to see if they will waive the $39 late payment fee. If you are normally a person who pays on time they sometimes have the ability to waive one late payment a year. That's what happened to me a little while back. Doesn't hurt to call and ask!

Good point. I've had luck calling the CC company and asking for a supervisor. The regular reps won't waive any fees but if you ask for a supervisor you can usually talk your way out of it.

Hey, great idea. I just called them and from what I understand (couldn't understand the CSR too well over the phone), I'll be getting a credit back for that $39.

Also, as others have pointed out, my rate might increase. I'm not worried about that as I always pay off the balance, but that might be helpful for others who read this thread who don't pay off balances in full.

Good to hear that you should be getting it credited back.... Just make sure to follow up on it--if it goes 2 weeks or so and still no credit, call back. Try not to let it happen, but if it's not in there by the time your next statement comes, call back again and make sure it gets figured out.

I've missed a couple payments over the years for the same reason -- just forgot. Both times the companies waived the late fee and interest. CC companies aren't all bad

                  Card Companies are understanding

Card companies are understanding, as long as you don't "forget" them for more than one month. If you have a good billing history it should not be a problem.

Can you set up CCs due dates reminder system on your computer's calendar? All these bills can be tracked on-line. I set up payments on-line on 'desk day' so that the funds are released on Due Dates.

                        Good!

So as not to forget to pay my bills, I have set up multiple reminders for myself. I have an online gmail calendar, and I have it send me reminder emails periodically. Plus, if you go to the credit card customer service site online, they usually have an alerts feature that allows them to send you reminder emails, text messages, etc. before the due date.

I have done this a couple times and was alway refunded the late fee. However, it has been a couple years but did it recently and they refused to waive the late fee. I thought maybe it was the economy or something. It is a card that pays back 3% so they usually pay me and I always pay every week so no interest. Figured it may have been cause they were sick of giving me checks and never getting anything in return.
