When I used to help people order DSL without the phone line charge we asked for a "dry line" this was years ago so they may have changed the terminology. We found that we had to call several times before we got a represenative that understood what we were asking for. Hughes net is a horrible services. It is very expensive and slow. They claim in downloads at DSL equivalant speeds, but the problem is latency. You click a link then have to wait for a bit, then it the whole page comes up at once. They cap the amount of information you can download in a month, and if you exceed it your service slows down to an unusable rate. For my parents, one download of windows updates rendered their service unusable for a month. Finally, customer support is based out of a foreign country. They are hard to understand, don't understand basic internet terms, and at the end of your 4 hour phone call ... that they are unable to help you. You will be calling them quite a bit, I was out helping my parents 5 time in a month.

Jim, in your area, just contact Time Warner. I believe that is the cable company in your area. Ask them how much it will be for just internet.

Also, The comparison that cable is shared and DSL isn't is not correct. Every internet connection is shared at some point. It is however more likely that a single user can have more effect on other users on a cable modem network.
