  • Sneaky Way Online Retailers Rip You Off

    Watch out for this one.

I do a fair amount of shopping online and was going to purchase some ant bait from a pest control company. By comparison shopping I was able to find one website that was $3 cheaper than the another, but I failed to check out the shipping and handling costs.

On the initial form they indicated that ground shipping and handling (for a very small package) was just $1.75, but after I filled in all my info, the total for S&H was $8.95!

When I called the company on the phone to ask about hte discrepancy, he put me on hold, then returned and said "the best they could do was to give me S&H for $7." But wait a minute, I said, why did it say $1.75 then? He said he didn't know.

I think it's a way to take advantage of shoppers who don't carefully review the final invoice before hitting the Order button. I bought the ant bait from another site that offered free shipping.

I see this on eBay all the time. Someone will sell an item that could be shipped first class for, say, 80 cents and charges $5.00 shipping.

    Buyer beware.

The company with the hidden S&H charge was called Do It Yourself Pest Products, not to be confused with doyourownpestcontrol.com, which is where i ultimately bought the ant bait gel.

That is exactly the reason I do not buy much on EBay. When I asked one foolish EBay seller why the shipping and handling costs on a poster print he was selling was $29.95, he stated, "it's my price, take it or leave".

And to the best of my knowledge, that is EXACTLY what he did. He is no longer a seller on EBay.

Sellers inflate their S&H mainly to reduce the final value fee charged by eBay. The winning bid amount is what is used to calculate the final value fee, not the winning bid amount plus shipping. So if someone sold an item for $15 plus $5 shipping and another sold the same item to the same buyer for $10 plue $10 shipping from the same place, the second seller would pay less to eBay even though the total cost shipped is the same for both auctions. That's why some auctions are won with a final bid of a penny -- the seller is making the profit in the shipping.

EBay has a rule against "fee avoidance" like this, but as long as the overcharge in shipping isn't egregious it probably wouldn't be contested by eBay -- or any buyers, for that matter. Most buyers will factor in the shipping when they bid or "buy it now." Lower overall price usually still wins.

Now, if the auction says one shipping price (or the seller says one shipping price) and you're charged another, then you definitely have reason to complain. Even if the shipping charges are high, they should be accurate.
