Who I do envy is the guy or gal or couple that has reached retirement with a monstrous nestegg and have zero debt and have conquered life's numerous challenges and have a long forgotten mortgage payment. They can now truly enjoy the fruits of their labor.

I guess I am envious of someone but I'm working to be their equal. Maybe these are the "jones" we should all be envious of.

Sometimes these big spenders, label spenders, braggart spenders do not really have the resources to live like this.

They could have 80,000.00 in credit card debt, an upside down mortgage and an upsidedown car loan for that matter.

These types cannot live without their worthless or frivolous luxuries.

They put their whole financial energy into this nonsense.

A lot of these people tend to head to bankruptcy in an economy such as this.

They never seem to come out ahead or even.

Of course, there are some people that can fully afford this type of spending.
But for how long, I have personally known people to spend down what is considered a very high income and have nothing to show for it.

While reading this thread I was thinking the exact same thing!

We are that kind of social animal aren't we? Constantly mesuring how we do compared to the group.

Probably why you will almost certainly be more "happy" having the nicest house in a crappy neighborhood than the worst house in an upscale 'hood, even if the latter house is nicer than the former... It's not so much what you have or do, it's what you have and do compared to your reference group.

i don't compare myself to others

that being said, I'm in debt but I sure am grateful I have a roof over my head, 4 tires and a steering wheel, and food to eat. there are many in th world that do not even own shoes.

Man, I went through a bout of envy last night when I watched the Super Bowl at a friend's place. Watched the game on their 50" samsung and matching leather couch, hung out in their kitchen with the granite counter tops and new stainless steel appliances.

I think part of the my sadness (if you want to call it that) is my imagined perception that our friends think we must be poor(er) or something for not having the similar nice stuff. But keeping up with the Joneses seems like such a waste of energy and resources. I'd rather bitch about it online for free!

I think a bit of envy is a good thing. If people don't aspire to something bettter, then what are we working for? You just need to keep it in reason.

                  Don't worry

Everybody has their own demons to fight. Some people are too conscious with their money while others very careless about the way they spend. You don't have to be angry or envy about them at all.
