  • More shrinking package sizes (but not prices)

I know we've discussed this before. Many manufacturers are doing hidden price increases by keeping the price the same but making the package smaller. I've recently seen 2 examples of this.

Several companies have shrunk the "half-gallon" orange juice carton to 59 ounces. Tropicana was particularly sneaky as the new carton is actually taller than the old 64 ounce carton. And Tree Ripe brand has it labeled as a new easier to pour carton. Of course it is easier to pour. It is smaller and lighter. Not any cheaper, though.

The second one we just encountered was Aqua Net hairspray. The can used to be 14 ounces and was a uniform circumference from top to bottom. Now, the can is tapered at the top. Sure enough, it now holds just 11 ounces of product.

Peanut butter and mayo containers are now smaller too because they are packaged in something that looks to be the same size as the original but the package now has an indentation in the bottom. This annoys me because it makes it harder to get the last bit out of the container.

The hard-likker lobby has been doing this for ages - rather than raise the price of a quart they invented the 'fifth' then came the metric 3/4 liter. While doing this they dropped the 'standard' proof from 85 to 80. All this to hide the fact they were raising prices.

I'm pretty sure that all my life canned tuna has been sold in 6 ounce cans. I was checking prices at Target the other day and noticed they were now all 5 ounce cans. Not sure if the cans themselves are smaller if if there is just more water inside them.

I picked up an "thing" of ice cream yesterday and instead of the paultry 1.75 I have became used to it was 1.5, it only seemed to be the high end brands that were smaller so I saved money twice and bought the generic

At least there is a limit to the amount of air in ice cream - at one time 'they' whipped so much air into the ice cream that a 'quart' was nearly 3/4s air. When the product is sold by volume there is a lot of room for fudging.

Probably mentioned in a previous thread, but Girl Scout cookies are smaller this year... Not sure if the boxes are smaller, but my Thin Mints and Tagalongs are definitely reduced in size.

Did you know this was regional? I bought cookies from my cousin in NH and the boxes were smaller than the ones we bought here in MA. I can't remember the cookie difference - 2 or 4 less each box. The boxes themselves were much smaller as well. What a crock! I wouldn't have noticed had I not stood them side by side.

There are 2 bakeries that produce GS cookies. Your region may have switched bakers this year. Ours did because 2 councils merged and our area got the baker that the other council was using so everything changed for us.
