My computing life is Mac-centric, but I can't bring myself to buy the iPhone because of the cost of the monthly plan. I can't imagine that it will bring $30 worth of monthly improvement to my life (not saying it doesn't for others).

My advice is to wait. They've already released a less expensive iPhone and there's talk that it will be on Verizon next year when the exclusivity contract with ATT expires. Competition should bring prices down.

I remember when Motorola released the RAZR and it was the hottest selling phone before the iPhone (and in total sales it actually still out guns the iPhone) but it was something astronomical like $150—$300. But after two years you could get it for $50.

Wait 'em out! In a year (or two) this stuff will be run of the mill and the carriers can't charge premium prices for them anymore.

Steve, I definitely feel your pain regarding the price. I was going through the same thing you are about three weeks ago...continuously trying to figure out the cost benefit. I wanted a device that could make my life easier by reducing the time it takes me to call and text people, websurf, check stocks, email, figure out how to get places and help with directions on the way... I could keep going on and on but the pint is that the iPhone is the only device that delivers everything I want. After having it now for a couple of weeks I can honestly say it's worth every penny I spend each month. Good luck!

Well... I finally did it. I went out and bought an i-phone. When i-phones first came out, the initial price was scary, but since the price has come down somewhat and my phone was starting to fall apart and needed replacing, I decided to go for an i-phone.

The data plan was the other major obstacle. <sigh> I'm still not tickled about having to pay that (for 2 years), but I guess I'll get over it.

I see what everyone means about the touch keyboard, it is going to take some time to get used to (me and my fat fingers! )...

I have looked at the aps store, but I keep thinking--what is a cheap person like me looking at aps that cost .99 a piece!? Oh well, for now I am going to focus on the free ones.

Another thing, your iPhone (if you choose to get it) will get fingerprints allover the screen. It's just something I don't like getting on my iTouch. Thanks

I have an iTouch, not quite the phone but it still is a great tool. For a phone I have a Blackberry Curve. It's great. I've head that the battery life for an iPhone isn't very long. I know the life on my iTouch isn't very long.

yes, you get the lower price for renewing your contract. I've had my original iphone for 2 years. The new one is replacing that one.

WOW! I just checked the prices on that thing on the AT&T website. I really hope you're getting a new 2-year contract with that thing ... $499 without a contract and 299 with a new contract.

As for texting, we already pay $30/month for unlimited texting for all of us. Would I have to pay an additional $20/month for texting with the iPhone?
    Sorry,
I meant if you have an existing data plan, which I had for basic web browsing on my V9 Motorola. i.e. you cannot use the iphone from ATT without their data service.

Yes, in anticipation of the June 19th release of the IPhone 3GS the price for the 8GB model has been dropped to $99 (although AT&T has been offering $99 refurb units for a couple weeks now).

Personally I'd wait for the 3GS. Double the speed, turn-by-turn driving directions . . . it has plenty of advantages worth the extra $100.

Ehh.. I think other companies will do just fine eventually matching with the iPhone technology. Also, IMO an ipod touch is much better

I noticed that, too. Of course, being the frugal guy I am, what changed most was the price, from $600 to $200. There are a lot of neat tech things out there that I wouldn't mind having but the price keeps me away. Once the price gets to what I consider reasonable, then I start actually paying attention and thinking about if the item would actually be useful to me.

For the record, I do not have an iPhone. The monthly fee is still the deal-breaker for me. My wife would like one, too, but she has the same issue. If the monthly fee was the same as what we currently pay, I think we'd get them. The price of the phone itself is no longer the barrier for us.
