Sounds like a great sales pitch. If I weren't so honest, I would use it.

I think they got one on you. He probably put it in a bank or the stock market (oops). For entertainment purposes. I do know that back when some older people used to bury their money in their gardens.

Those tales are most often urban legend but fun to chase down. I would carefully examine all parts that are 1926 vintage. If the closet rods are original I'd take them down to see of anything is stashed in the rod or the wall base. Homes of that vintage had a cold cellar for food storage. If accessible, check every rock as it was typical to hide valuables under a moveable rock. Use a high powered light to check the underside of the foundation. If there are old trees on the propery, do they have some type of hollow 4 + ft. from the ground? If any old, rusted vehicles have been left on the property, valueables can be stashed in the gas tank. If you can locate photos from that time frame, review the garden dimensions. People who like to garden, grow food etc.. will 'plant' valuables in glass jars.

I would remove all the walls of the house-it's probably hidden in the walls...

I'd say you're wasting your time looking for urban legend cash that doesn't exist. Just in case, though, here's an idea of the what to expect:

$500,000 in $100 bills would fit in a small briefcase and weigh only 10 pounds.

$500,000 in $20 bills would fit in a filing cabinet drawer and weigh 50 pounds.

Like Boosami, I think that you might need to consider how much space this money would take up. Of course, it could be spread across several hiding places, couldn't it?

If it is paper money, it could have become wet and rotted, or maybe mice shredded it into nesting material. If any of it is coin, perhaps a metal detector can help you.

I'd love to hear where you have already looked. I presume the former owners have looked everywhere they could think of, too.

Just to encourage you (for the sake of fun, as it think it is unlikely there really is any half million dollars)-- let me mention that there is something hidden in my house, too. I know this is true, because my husband and I hid it, yet we cannot remember where it is. After only a year hiding it, we forgot where we put it. Now it has been 15 years.
