  • Anyone use will making software

I need to update my will. Last time I did it, it was $500 to a lawyer (and that was the "friends and family" discount). Has anyone ever used will making software? I would worry about the legality of the documents.

Costco has one (Quicken) on sale-with a coupon it's $35. It could save me big bucks.

    Any thoughts?

The legality isn't generally an issue... I believe you just have to take the document to get notarized or something similar. (Can't say for certain--never used it myself)

I've heard of a number of people who have used software to do it, and for a basic will (if it's just you, maybe a spouse, no dependent children), they generally do a fine job. However, once I have a family (and especially since my career field will likely have me deploying regularly), I expect that I'll be going to a lawyer. Lawyers are simply able to get a much better understanding of your personal situation, and a good one will make sure that any and all potential issues or situations are covered.

Sometimes these things come in packages - it's quite smart to also do a living will while you are doing a financial one.

I used the Quicken Family Lawyer program for a number of legal documents including my will, living will, power of attorney, etc. At least in my state it works very well. The documents are crafted so they comply with each state's individual requirements when you select the state of residence at the onset of using the program.
