I'm sure because it is universal. We don't all buy golf clubs. We don't all have pets. We don't all wear make up or buy purses or collect baseball cards. But we all eat out at least occasionally.Steve

I have to admit that I probably justify eating out too much. Food is the center of what brings people together.

It's a toss up between dogs and boats. If you've never heard this saying I'll state it for you. "A boat is a hole in the water that you dump all your money into" I have a small one and a larger one so I have two money holes. I am an occasional breeder of lab retrievers and although I can get several hundred dollars per puppy, I doubt that I really come out ahead of the game because I can never resist keeping one for myself."Those who can't remember the past are condemmed to repeat it".- George Santayana.

Is eating out necessarily a "waste of money?" I mean, you need to eat, and if you go to a place with good food at a good price and has a good atmosphere, is it that wasteful or enjoyable? Its nice to get out and let someone else do the cooking/serving.
In terms of eating out, I would say eating out too much and/or eating crappy (poor taste and health factor) fast food is wasteful. Eating out within your means may not be wasteful if you eat good food and enjoy the experience.
I guess I expected to see more "I buy things I already have plenty of" or "I always buy the newest version of whatever" responses. Like shoes, purses, outdoors equipment, latest computer gadget, cell phone, etc.

Me and dh went to Quizno's today. Some 12 inch subs are 5 bucks. WE had a buy one get one free sub coupon. I was surprised it included the cheaper priced $5 subs. WE got to eat 2 foot long subs for $5.30 after tax. Not my idea of wasting money. I got a lot of toppings on it and stuff too. IT has lots of lunch meat on it which would have cost a few bucks anyway. I don't get drinks. I dont' drink soda anyway. lol (bad for you)
MY dh always says "WE gottta eat!" whenver I complain about food prices.

Thankfully I am deployed right now so I can't spend money. Other than stocks. But that's for retirement and to help pay for a house 5-10 years from now. So it's not a waste
Back in the states I buy electronics that I think are cool. I always see eating out as a waste of money. Can usually get the same thing from walmart and throw it in the oven for 50 min.

Wasteful and Enjoyable are not opposites. Sure, going out to eat is enjoyable. That's partly why we do it. No matter what, though, it is a luxury expenditure. We can eat far cheaper (and healthier) at home.Originally posted by Bimmer View PostIs eating out necessarily a "waste of money?" We had dinner at Olive Garden last night. We went there because we had gift certificates that we had gotten at the holidays, so it didn't cost anything out of pocket. We also had a $4 off coupon from the Sunday paper. Still, the bill for the 3 of us, including tip, came to over $36. You can make a lot more food at home for $36 than what we got there in one meal. I'm sure we've never spent anywhere near $36 to make a home-cooked meal for 3.Steve

I always spend way too much at Olive Garden. I love italian food and tend to over do things a bit when I'm there. Don't go there often so no big deal. My last meal for 3 was over 100 bucks but included a couple of bottles of wine which they charge a premium for. It was a birthday celebration and was fun.Originally posted by disneysteve View PostWe had dinner at Olive Garden last night.
