  • Do we have any tax experts here?

Not general information, but for a specific event -- i.e. a federal disaster. As I've mentioned before, our home (secondary residence we were trying to sell) was flooded in a federally declared emergency (freak flood). We had no flood insurance, and FEMA basically said we were SOL. The only thing we qualified for was writing the loss off on our taxes, but I have no idea where to begin with that. They said you could file an amended return at any point after it was declared a federal emergency, but I haven't. Couldn't figure it out, couldn't afford a tax attorney, and am 8 months preggers with twins. Anyone wanna help me out??

    YES

    two choices
file an amended return for 2007
    or
claim the loss on 2008 return (due in April)

Look under casualty/losses portion of the return.
I have not prepared a return with this, but I THINK it is on schedule A.
