  • We bought ourselves gift certificates today

One thing that careful shoppers can sometimes clean up on is promo offers on gift cards. We went out to lunch today at a local restaurant that we like. They are running a special on gift cards: buy $100, get $20 free. So we did. I paid $100 and got $120 in gift cards. None of it will be used for gifts, though. We will keep it all for ourselves. We used $25 to pay for today's meal, leaving a $95.00 balance.

In addition, I paid for the purchase with my Discover card since restaurant purchases get a 5% cashback bonus through December, so the $100 really only cost me $95, meaning I got $25 free, exactly what today's meal cost.

A local mall is doing a gift card promo. If you buy 3 $20 cards, you get a $15 gas card. That's also a good deal though we haven't done that one yet.

I agree. I found a rebate recently that if you buy $20 gift card for any retailer, you get a $10 refund by mail. Not bad!

DH hits the Godiva store for their post-holiday clearance sales (50% off the day after Valentine's Day or Christmas) and gives the chocolates to his customers as gifts ... Costco recently had $50 Godiva gift cards for sale for $40 each so I went ahead and bought him 2 of them. He'll be shopping at Godiva anyway ... why not save an additional 20%? (Hopefully they won't go out of business before Dec 26th! Not that I think they will, but these days you never know. If you buy a gift card, you are taking a bit of a calculated risk.)

I also took advantage of a similar deal.

We were taking my SOs father out to Outback for his birthday. I knew the meal would approach $100 so I bought a $100 gift card, got a free $20 one and paid the meal with the $100. I still have $14 left over from that one, and the $20 one...should be enough for me and my SO to go to outback on our own

Buca di Beppo, a chain of Italian restaurants, is giving you a free $25 GC when you buy $100.

I saw that at CVS American Express is offering a mail in rebate when you buy gift cards. It isn't as good as the one I found before but still a rebate!
