I know someone who does that - she has an eBay store selling kids clothes. She makes a fairly consistent part time income (i.e. realistic, but worth her while to put in the effort).

If you have computer skills, are there any small businesses around that could use some help installing software? I know a bank around here that is doing some of its tracking in an excel spreadsheet and they want to instead us an access database to track it and run reports off of it. If they give me some set up info, I'm going to set that up for them.

A friend of mine gets used computers, refurbishes them, installed windows and sells them. He could make a lot of money off of it, but it is just hobby for him right now.

I read about someone advertising that they would wrap Christmas presents for people, a certain amount per box.

My sister is starting to cook frozen dinners for people at her church. They are paying her $100 a week and she is cooking enough supper meals for 2 people in their house. They bought the tupperware/casserole dishes, and she buys the food and cooks it, and she gives it to them after church on Sunday. She figures if she can get 4-5 people to do that, she could go part time at her current job and spend more time with her daughter.

I work at a fast food place as a second job. It's been easy to set aside my pride when there's bills to be paid.

I'm a speech therapist for the schools, but I work part time for a local home health agency, and I schedule my patients after school and on the weekends. It's very flexible, and pays well, too.

For an IT professional, you could look at providing computer setup and support to individuals and small businesses. For instance, my grandmother knows just enough to do email, and there is a guy she calls whenever she has issues with her computer. Advertise by putting up flyers in retirement communities.

The contracting firm I work for just hired someone for a small project to set up a VPN, backup storage, and other related items. We have the knowledge to do it ourselves, but were too busy with projects for our clients, and so decided it was worth paying someone with skills similar to yours to do a small project. You'd find clients through word of mouth and maybe craig's list.

                        That's great, Maat!

I've had an unpaid 2nd job for a year planning and building websites. Doesn't sound fun, but it helped me break into a related field of Search Engine Marketing. I start that job in a couple of weeks.

My side job will be freelance financial writing with my current company. They need the work and I need the income. If you're searching for side work and you like to write, I highly recommend pursuing online writing. It's been a great thing for me.

                          why a second job?
Time is our most valuable asset.
Everyone I know in IT makes a pretty darn good salary. My wife codes in C# and makes just shy of 6 figures.

What about just enjoying your time off? Life is so short, and in 10 or 20 years you'll look back and say...well...I sure did work a lot!

I wish I could. The generic labor up here is so scarce I could almost make more money at McDonald's than I do as a reporter.

But sadly, my job requires me to be available almost any hours.
