  • company truck vs personal truck

I am very frustrated with my husbands employer, can you help? My husband's boss wants him to use his own vehicle instead of a company one. They will pay him 70 cents/mile. if he uses our truck vs our jeep. He carries all their tools and equipment around so we basically could not use it for personal use unless we unloaded it each time. They also pay him to drive to and from the office(25 miles). This was something they added at hiring time. They now do not want to do this. We pay all insurance and maintenance. They have a company truck that they just pulled from an employee that quit(go figure) but are going to sell it instead of letting my husband use it(he is the maintenance supervisor.)
Does any of this make sense? Is there any advantage to taking the 70 cents, it just doesn't seem to be a good deal.
    Thanks!

Tell the employer that you only have a Yugo and the tools won't fit next to the two baby seats!!!

I kid, I kid.... but if I were in his shoes I would probably look for another job, or start my own business if they wanted me to use my vehicle for their company use without adequate compensation. Adequate being well compensated for the vehicle use (wear, tear, maintenance, etc.) AND an increase in pay to make up the difference. Current government rates are $0.505 per mile.

Looking at your post again, he will be losing approx. $3.00 per gallon of fuel he uses (if it's gasoline, not diesel). You would need to figure the vehicle's fuel mileage, and how many miles he drives to see what the difference would be. His pay should be increased accordingly in my opinion.
