We found out today that the supermarket closest to our house (actually just behind our development) is closing at the end of the month. It is a Shop Rite that took over a site that was formerly a Stop and Shop and a Super G before that. It only became a Shop Rite about a year ago and is owned by a family that owns multiple other Shop Rites in the area. The cashier said that they apparently aren't making enough money there.
We're upset that they're closing because it is very convenient to us when we need something quick or just want to grab a couple of items on our way home. It is close enough that I've stopped in the middle of cooking something when I realized I was missing an ingredient and ran over there.
However, we're not at all surprised by their closing. Wegman's opened in our area about 2 years ago and really cornered the market. The store is large, well-stocked and staffed with helpful employees and, best of all, has lower prices than Shop Rite on almost everything. Even today, before we found out about the store closing, my wife and I passed up several items that we need to buy because Shop Rite's price was higher than Wegman's price. If it wasn't something we needed right away, we skipped it.
I hate to see a store close, especially that close to home, but they simply weren't competing with Wegman's on price, selection or atmosphere.
