  • Rebate checks diverted to pay $2B in debts

USA today said: About $2 billion in economic stimulus rebate checks are being confiscated to pay overdue bills for child support, students loans and back taxes, the government says.

So far, 1.8 million rebate checks have been intercepted by Treasury Department computers showing that individuals owe money to federal or state governments.

The biggest beneficiaries: parents who are owed child support.

Wow... Debt always catches up to those who owe.

A good idea, especially with child support, however hardly stimulating the ecconomy is it.

Well, if any of these checks are stimulating the economy, then those going to child support would be. Child support money does not get locked in a drawer. It is spent on the child's needs. It gets into circulation.

I agree. As someone who is owed child support, I'm all for collection of back support.

But, I think what was meant above was that the economy doesn't appear to be improving since the economic stimulus checks arrived. I have no data on this, but it just doesn't seem to be.
