  • Changing health insurance to husband's?

    Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding changing my insurance to my husband's. He has his through his employer and I have mine through my school. I am thinking of changing to his in August because it is better than mine and I could use it since we are planning to having a child in about a year. It is a little more expensive (about $25 more a month), but while mine has 20% coinsurance for all maternity related expenses, his has no prenatal visit costs and only a $250 copay for hospitalization. The open enrollment period for his insurance is in June and for my school it is not until August. Does this mean I will have to pay for two insurances for myself for 2 months? If so, do you think switching to his plan is still a good idea?

    Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Gemini

I would do it if it would save money in the long run....especially if it's better. Anything can happen with children so I would make sure I had the best coverage I could. I switched to my husband's PPO coverage through his work and with my son it's been worth it.

I would switch to his coverage in June -- you probably won't be able to do it in August because you won't have a qualifying event. Find out when your coverage will begin, and contact your insurance and ask for it to be terminated on the same date. You don't want to be double-covered if you can avoid it -- if you get into a car accident or similar expensive incident while you are double covered it can be a beaurocratic nightmare trying to get the companies to pay up.
