Have you noticed that Easter is becoming more and more commercialized? It seems I have been seeing more and more Easter gift giving ideas on TV, not to mention all the tie ins with candy and other goodies for kids.

In fact today, I received 3 Easter gifts and more than 10 Easter cards from aquaintences. Of course I feel obliged to give something back, but really don't have any desire to do so. The last thing I need is another gift and card giving occassion.

Are others finding that this is happeneing? In a few more years Easter is going to be as bad as Christmas

People are hanging eggs(plastic) from trees here. It is just a matter of time before crass commercialism takes over completely. Soon we'll have Easter lights on houses along with giant Easter Bunnies on the lawn. My neighbors have a giant Easter bunny on their lawn.

I couldn't agree even more! I am not a huge fan of the holidays (religious and personal beliefs) but Easter I think is a holiday we can do without. All that stuff you buy ends up being junk and it is a waste of money every year. I noticed that when I go to any store whether it be Dollar Store, Smiths or Walmart-the majority of the stuff is junk. Especially during the holidays.

When I was growing up, I never had a visit from mister bunny but now it seems like the bunny HAS to pay visits .. almost like santa? What's up with that??

This year I bought twenty dollars worth of stuff and made my own gifts... I LOVE 99cent stores!!!

I didn't say I didn't love $1.00 Stores. I just think people collect too much stuff and then it is just sitting around there house-I am somewhat of a packrat and when I look around I realize there is alot of stuff I don't need.

I agree completely.. My daughter came home with a basket full of plastic easter eggs which will probably wind up in her overstuffed toy box. The items I bought at the store turned out four baskets which just as good (if not better) than the commercial 20 dollar basket hubby used to buy every year. So I managed to save us sixty bucks.. woohoo

I just want to add my personal pet peeve, I do get my kids a basket, we went with a share basket cause really they do have to share anyway, and we got them garden stuff and seeds (DS has been bugging me to plant carrots) (no crappy junk)

Anyway my Peeve, WE GAVE THEM THE PRESENTS, not some bunny, my DH and I we deserve the credit thank you very much. sorry.

I agree with all of you!!! We had to buy flowers for hubby's mom and aunts (and me from the kids). Then we got the kids baskets including a couple of small gifts (in lieu of candy). My 4 year old opened his and said "Where's the rest?" (nice...) I had to remind them that this is Easter and not Christmas! As for cards, I can't stand them. I was never much of a card person to begin with, and I'll do Christmas cards with the kids' pictures in them, but I don't send them for anything else. They can run up to $4 each. My feeling is that I'd rather put that toward the gift (or save it ) then spend it on that...

We don't celebrate Easter that way in ES (my family does, because Dad was German, so we DID get Easter bunny visits every year! hurray for chocolate!!...we made our baskets out of construction paper on Saturday, then Dad would get up and play bunny the next day...the fun part was the hunt, see who could find the most eggs...but, at the end of the day, all eggs were shared - generally there were 2 eggs per kid!)....
the traditional way here in ES is going to the processions (which we also did, but, mostly went to Holy Friday procession only)...no cards, no gifts...

                    Re: Easter cards and gifts

It's easy to feel guilty when people are giving you random gifts. My BF's parents gave us a gift, and not a cheap one at that. I brought her a plant. That was it. I hate the commercialism of everything too, and I'd rather keep gifts for birthdays, Christmas, and the occasional "I was thinking of you." It's just too much, and I want everyone I love to stop spending so much money on frivolity. I know they love me, they don't have to give me 50 pounds of candy or an Easter bunny to show it.

Hey anybody with a garden, speaking of plants. Are you successful at giving flowers from the garden for easter and mothers day?
