    Got Free Celery for paying attention

    I just got back from the supermarket. Just for paying attention, I got a free bunch of celery. The shelf tag said $1.29. I went to the scale to print the price sticker and it printed out at $1.39. So I took it over to the guy at the Produce counter and pointed out the discrepancy. He walked over to the celery bin with me to confirm the problem, took out a pen, blacked out the bar code and wrote FREE and his name on the sticker. So I saved $1.29!

    Moral of the story: Pay attention to prices and make sure they ring up properly.

    That's great that they gave it to you for free! So many places will just mark it down to the shelf price.

      That's what I expected. I think it might be because the guy I asked was the produce manager.

        Cool! I'm going to grow celery in my garden this year, despite the pros telling me it is too hot here for celery. But even garden celery is not free.

          I only DREAM that my grocery store chain would do this. They used to years ago but obviously it became too expensive for them because so many items in the store are mispriced.

          I only shop once a week and usually spend between $70 - $90. About once every other trip there is at least one item on my bill that has been mispriced either because the shelf price doesn't match the computer price or because the cashier has incorrectly identified my veggies and charged me for the wrong thing. (Don't ask about the time when my $0.69/lb bok choy was mistaken for the $3.69/lb leeks.)

          I have gotten in the habit of checking my receipt before I walk out of the store but I didn't this weekend. Sure enough, I got out to the car and looked it over and the $2.88 fresh pineapple rang up at $3.88. I had ice cream and it was warm so I didn't bother to run back into the store.

          Grrrrrr.

            A little off topic but I love to brag about this....one time I went to Chipotle to get lunch for the 5 people in our office. I waited in line for so long, that they gave me all 5 meals for free!!! I didn't even complain, the manager just said, "I'm giving this to you for free for waiting so long." I was just happy to be out of the office!

              So there is such a thing as a free lunch!

              One time I went to the grocery store and purchased a loaf of bakery bread that was $0.99 with a $1.00 coupon attached. Not only did I get that bread free, but the cashier gave me a penny back. Ha! I love it.

                That's great, although I still wouldn't eat celery even if it was free!
