  • Who does Amazon think you are?

If you order from Amazon.com. you get email ads suggesting items they think you might like. Do they get it right?

My current book recs from them are

    1) Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Volume 1
    2) The Art of Mexican Cooking
    3) City Gardens: Creative Urban Gardens and Expert Design Ideas (Canadian Gardening)
    4) A1c At-Home Test Kit, OTC (not a book, but was listed with books)

    5) Study Guide for Stewart's Single Variable Calculus, 6th
    6) World Revolution The Plot Against Civilization (new edition)
    7) Good Calories, Bad Calories
    8) Secret Societies and Subversive Movements

#6 and #8 are the oddball ones, but I think I know what books led them to suggest them. #1, #2, and #4 I have already bought through them. They think I want to buy them again?

Teehee. I peeked on a whim and they had a slew of recommendations for stuff I already bought. (e.g. silicon baking pans - apparently they think I want to buy 20 more varities).

Likewise, I loved the long list of "new baby" and "big brother" books since I bought my older child some "I'm going to be a big brother books" in 2004. Seems like they can note on the system that these are kind of one-time things. Plus, how many of those do you need? I have like 20 recommendations.

I don't remember buying anything Tori Amos, but must have, because they recommend a slew of Tori Amos stuff - CDs, books, videos.

& photo shop books and a lot of non-fiction on the neuroscience and philosophy, etc.

Those books look interesting. So, yeah, if I looked at this EVER I would be in trouble. I see a really neat photo shop editing book. I have to stop looking...

Funny thing is I bought a few personal finance books on sale in December, but I didn't see one personal finance recommendation. They seem stuck on my OLD purchases.

      - Walking Videos (I purchased 1 a couple of months ago so now they have at least 10 they are recommending.
      - Dinosaur books
      - Bionicle Books
      - How to Draw books
      - Naruto Books
      - Christmas Linens from Lenox (I purchased and then returned)
      - Nerf Guns & accessories

Everything on my recommended list is based on past purchases so nothing strange came up.

They think because I ordered some gifts for male friends that I'm into comic books.

Because I ordered some Tin-Tin books for my boys when they were younger that I'm a Tin-Tin fanatic.

Because I ordered one book about my tribe that I'll want every book w/it's name in the title...

So, I'm not all that excited about their recommendation program.

They think I want organic granola bars, organic raisins, lots of blues clues videos (I bought one for my nephew for Christmas 2 years ago!) some fantasy books, and a book about romantic getaways in my area.

I've never bought groceries from them, but I considered it at one point due to a promotion they were running.
