Re: baby surprise
Congrats, and aside form the carseat nothing else is a must. Oh well bottles.
Some useful stuff: (IMO)
-A hand blender to puree vegetables and fruit for baby (cook first.) store bought baby food is expensive but most brands are pretty natural without sodium or whatever.
-A baby or toddler spoon, baby mouth is pretty small for a big one.
-Bucklable booster or highchair, though no need to get the kind with a 5 point harness. mine was about 20$ I think. folds down for travel.
-Cherreos, to hopefully keep kids hand occupied while you shovel food (if kid isn't already on food or if you don't know what theyve tried, start with one kind at a time for 4 days each - lots of websites on what is good, you prolly already know no peanut buter yet)
-coffe mugs to put said food in. (handle is easier to hold while feeding with the other hand, do not give to child!)
-diapers, lots of them, don't be surprised if they leak all over the place, all butts are shaped differntly you gotta find the brand that is shaped best like your kid (or spend a fortune on the really streatchy ones, or use cloth)
- baby soap stuff, less additives the better, though you might luck out on a kid that doesn't mind lavendar or whatnot. (I think ivory works too, but doesn't come in a pump)
-skip the baby towls less you want them, a regular one works fine. Also you can prolly skip the baby bath unless it is a small 9 month old you would only get a couple weeks if out of it, umm wait I might have big kids? Anyway I used a bath bouncer looking thing for my DD worked great in the big tub, form the start. when she could sit up I just let her sit up in the big tub.
- a crossword or favorite website to give you someting to do when kid is up for the billionth time in the middle of the night
- a sling till the kid learns to walk, unless you don't mnd joing the crowds of mothers holding a child and pushing a stroller(kidding plenty of kids do stay in strollers, though I prefer my sling)
-clotheswise, the minimum in my book is 5 of each, socks sleepers, daywear, etc. more wont hurt if you have the loot. coats come in many odd forms for a baby, from sleeping bag looking contraptions to grown up trench coats, make sure whatever it is you can get them in the carseat in it. (weather depending and all) Blankets wont stay on my kids at that age so they are only for decoration, same with shoes.
-some of your favorite headache medicine

Re: baby surprise
Wow! Congrats! Be sure to sign up with emfamil or whoever has the formula you need for their "welcome baby" or whatever pack. (Take a look at the "freebies" section, I'm pretty sure they're there.) They should send you a sample and some "retail checks". Since you've only got a couple of months before you can switch to whole milk you should be able to minimize formula costs.
Beg and borrow. You've got friends with kids? They probably have clothes, swings, diaper pails, bottles (or sippy cups), whatever. I bet they'd be happy to loan you all sorts of stuff. At nine months your baby won't be using anything for very long.
When your diapers leak, e-mail the company and tell them that. I've received very nice coupons that really help reduce the cost.
Good luck!!!

Re: baby surprise
That's really neat, congratulations
Great suggestions so far. The only thing I can add is that the 'baby' and 'free' sections at Craigslist.org are your friends. Garage sales usually have lots of baby stuff too.
Best of luck.
