    Just because someone is high-functioning does not mean they aren't an alcoholic, or that it isn't harming their health. I believe the official recommendation from most health agencies is that it is unhealthy for a typical person to drink more than two standard alcoholic drinks a day. Drinking more doesn't make you an automatic alcoholic, but it may not be good for your health. I don't know the "official" guidelines for alcoholism, other than it is a dependency on alcohol.
