  • Quicken Will and Trust

Has anyone used Quicken's Will and Trust package? How did you feel about the quality of it? Was it flexible enough to specify something like that the trustee should distribute money to your child at ages 25, 30, and 35?

I've got a will and living trust that I set up before we married, but it needs to be updated to reflect a different guardian and trustee should both my husband and I die. However I was really dissatisfied with the lawyer who drew it up and I don't want to use him again. It's hard for me to trust referrals from friends, as I wonder how qualified they are to judge how good the lawyer they used is!

I know that given our net worth (about $1M), we really should go see a proper estate planning attorney, but we've been procrastinating so long I'm considering using Quicken just as a stopgap. I took a look at legalzoom.com and was not impressed. So if you've used Quicken, what did you think?

I have it and used it to draw up wills and final arrangement plans. If you buy it in book form (I got mine at Amazon) it also comes with the ROM and is cheaper than buying the software alone. The book is an invaluable resource. At just over $30 it contains an incredible wealth of information- great resource to read before you use a lawyer even.

I don't recall how the trust sets up and how specific you can get on distribution. The package doesn't tout itself as a one size fits all (remember I used only the will end of the package, though I read through the trust information), so if you have any instructions that are a little out of the ordinary, it may not suit your needs. However, as I mentioned before, it is such a wealth of information regarding estate planning that I would highly recommend the book/software package to anyone.
