All I do is go to the message of the person that I want to "quote" and hit the quote button on their message. It gives me their message in the text of my relpy and then I can type right underneath it

Wouldn't a place with better schools and a safer neighborhood have higher property taxes? Or do you mean a major move, like to some little town in the Carolinas or something like that?

Just moving out of my county would lower my property taxes, and automatically give better schools -- my city has terrible schools, and my neighborhood has seen six shootings in the last six months. And yet we pay $4800/year for property tax. Unfortunately, due to my husband's job, we are tethered within a certain area... anything nicer within the city we can't afford, and anything nicer that we can afford is too far away.

I talked to my husband about this question while we were running errands today. He said even if he had enough money to retire today he would not do it. Because we have young kids at home, he wants to instill a good work ethic in them, and have them see 'daddy go to work every day.' He did say he would seek a position in the company where he was working 30-40 hours/week instead of 50-60, so that's something, I guess. But my dreams of a beautiful garden and lots of time w/ hubby will have to wait until he is 65.

How odd that the bad neighborhood with the lousy schools has higher taxes than the safer neighborhood with the better schools. How do they explain that?

BTW, I'd be happy to trade my $7,000 property tax bill with you.

Location, Location, Location. I'm not really talking on neighborhood level, though. I'm talking city-level. My city has higher taxes than the 'burb next door because property values are higher in the city, also the city levies some extra property taxes on its citizens that the 'burbs do not have. But the 'burb has better schools for lots of reasons that it probably doesn't make sense to go into here. It gets even more apparent if you go north one county... they do not have stadiums, light rail, bus system, etc. etc. to pay for. They still have nice schools, but it's a little more rural and further from the metro-center, so their property values are lower.

              Yikes! No thanks.

Higher taxes seem to never help anything and poor people still vote for the Dems.

Well I just graduated college and joined the full time work force under a year ago so I imagine that I would need a very large sum of $$ to provide for the rest of my life. That said, I am far too young to retire and would probably spend some % of the funds to purchase or start a business.

Well I don't work now..but Husband does..if we could retire, he would start writing and playing poker..but I am with whoever said a good work ethic is important, he would still be sent off to write without kid involvement for at least a couple days a week. The other ones we would do WAY more traveling. GMC so wants to see the redwood forests...and Mt Rushmore...and just about everything he has ever read of...

I don't know about that. We pay high property taxes but we have excellent municipal services, trash collection, snow removal, very good schools, etc. When we lived in Philly, taxes weren't so high but city services were lousy. I think most folks would have gladly paid more in taxes if they got good service in return.

We have high taxes for our area, but horrible trash and mail service. The schools are nice.

Mail service has nothing to do with your local taxes since that is Federal.

I guess in small towns they farm out carrier routes. I happy that my taxes and house payment here are less than just the taxes in parts of NY.
