  • What are your thoughts on subliminal messages?

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone here has any practical experience with this particular type of product.

I was referred to a website (no names, don't want to get banned!) by a coworker of mine who said she had purchased a series of subliminal message videos which had the intended consequence of giving you more motivation, more enthusiasm, and more of a passion for success.

I didn't think much of this at first, but it became clear after about three weeks that her performance at work was picking up at a really incredible pace. We are options market makers on the CBOE at a prop firm, and it seemed like almost overnight she went from laggard to outperforming nearly everyone else. I have known her for years and have not witnessed anything like this from her until now - could this be a grand coincidence?

I'm a believer in managing the mindset, especially to be receptive to success and instill a sense of opportunism, but I had never thought of doing this by trying to mold my subconscious in any particular way.

Have any of you had any experience with subliminal message videos? Or on a similar note, self-hypnosis audio or video?

I'm very curious, and almost ready to pull the trigger, but thought I'd inquire about a second opinion first,

    Regards

Another possibility is that the videos were just a placebo. Something motivated her to buy the videos -- maybe that same motivation to buy the videos is what motivated her improved performance at work.

I was thinking that myself, but from my perspective her performance represents almost a complete 180.. well I guess that's rude to say but she was consistently performing just well enough to stay on, I guess is a better way of saying it.

Seems to me like a pretty powerful placebo effect

I agree with Sweeps on this one.
If a person is willing to pay for something like this, it is only natural that they would believe they were getting motivational messages.
Noone wants to think that they got screwed out of their money.

This person wanted to change their habits otherwise they wouldn't have purchased these films.
But if it took that to light the fire under their butt then I would say it was money well spent.

There are studies if you search on google, where they show that constant subliminal Suggestions listened to on a daily basis, while in a relaxed state, and having an Open mind to wanting to take these suggestions, can help. I'm not sure that just by listening to a tape, you are going to change. But, listening to it over and over again, day after day, and actually using suggestions, and working on applying them, I think that the subliminal suggestions can help play a part.

Right or wrong, it's not hard to convince an already convinced mind. I would give it some more time to see if the effects last. Something tells me it won't....

Unless I were to get the author's deluxe power series audio CDs for only $399.99, or better yet, in 4 simple payments of only $129.99 which I have this strange desire to purchase.

I am not certain subliminal tapes or such like the kind you listen to while you sleep helps...but I am a fan of 'positive brainwashing'

The more times you hear something the harder it is to dispute..and confidence is very important to aid in performance of most areas.

Course you need that open mind, or else every time you hear. 'you can do this' you will respond yourself 'no I can't' which is the reverse of what you need to hear every day.

I believe in subliminal messages. That defense got me off 5 murder charges...

Just kidding. I thought this thread was going to be about Judas Priest or Ozzy Ozzborne and was terribly disappointed.

IMHO the thing about subliminal messages--if there really is such a thing-- is that by their very nature, you won't know what they are, that you're receiving them, and that they are acting on you.

So if there's a hidden suggestion in a TV commercial or movie, etc., to prompt people to behave in a certain manner, it's unlikely the creator will admit it.

Ultimately, the mind is a powerful tool.... and all of us can and do learn in various ways.

The real question in my mind is whether these methods of motivation are truely "learned" or are they a part of what we do because it's fresh on our minds. So, what happens when we stop listening?

Another thing to be aware of is that while it may work for her, it does not mean that it will work for you.

Many people have different ways to learn.... some of us learn by "doing"... some by listening... some are visual learners, etc. Apparently the more senses we involve with the learning process, the greater the chances of truely learning and retaining what we are trying to learn.

As others have suggested, she purchased these items to help herself get motivated. Seems to have worked in the short-term. But it was her desire to improved and this is the avenue she took to reach her goal.

These questions still remain: (1) what happens when she stops listening (does it truely change her long-term)? and (2) Will it work for you?

My vote is with placebo. She wanted to change her ways, and it's working. I agree with the other poster that it is money well spent if it is "convincing" her that she is more motivated, etc. The change is coming from her - she just needed to believe it would work and it did.

It's a self fullfilling thing. Does it work, yes if you want it to. That's what hynosis is. You will not do anything under hypnosis that is contrary to your core self. I only can say this because I am talking hynobirthing classes right now. I want a natural, drug free child birth, but I don't want to torture myself with pain. So I am using self-hynosis to learn how to do it pain free. And I've talked to people ... it works. So far from the little I have done, just starting on the CDs, classes start in a few weeks, it's working. I want a wonderful pain free natural child birth, and I believe it can be done, and have a strong will (makes for easier hynosis apperently) so I believe I will be succesful with this program.

Now if you believe it's a load of BS ... then that is also true.

Ah, the Metal Gods. I have listened to "Better By You Beter Than Me" from Stained Class probably 500 times, I still can't understand why Halford saying "do it" could be conceived as a command to commit suicide.

I would be more impressed if someone just gave her tapes to listen to which she didn't know were subliminal tapes and she just improved. without knowing the kind of tapes she was listening to. That might be more believable.
