I have noticed a couple of time lately that during the discussion board posts people are remarking "we have got away from finances" So What? I thought this board was to discuss anything? I have copied the line below the General Discussion board: Feel free to talk about anything and everything in this board. It doesn't even have to be about saving I don't personally post a lot but I do read constantly and from time to time comment back but this one is just coming up a lot. and it seems to come up when someone disagrees with someone else. One of the things I love the most about this site is the difference of opinions. And generally everyone is very calm and accepting. We are a society of mixed opinions, everyone is different. So I personally am going to continue to be free to discuss anything on this board even if it does not include money.

ITA! Sometimes, in talking about money, the conversation naturally goes off on another topic. That's just the nature of conversation. Plus, as you correctly point out, the board clearly states we can discuss "anything and everything" here, so nothing can truly be said to be off-topic. As long as people are polite and respectful of others' opinions, even though they may differ from your own, I also enjoy hearing differing views and experiences on all types of topics.Steve

If the thread starts about something non finance, folks reading it know what to expect, but if the thread starts as finance and some off topic note gets carried on for several posts, folk like to get it back on topic...usually I notice this when two opposing posters cycle back to their original comments, with no new info...more of a sophisticated 'is to/is not' argument.
Though I have to agree with sweeps..too much non financial and folks wont stick around...or rather if too many finance topics get derailed.

Bear in mind, the guideline, "Feel free to talk about anything and everything," applies to the General Discussion forum only. Other forums are clearly defined regarding subject matter.
This is, first and foremost, a personal finance site.
Also, if someone begins a topic in the the General Discussion forum, it is highly annoying to have it derailed by someone who clearly wants to talk about something else or who simply doesn't have regard for the discussion topic.
It is not a problem if discussions stray in the course of normal conversation regardless of forum, however, courtesy is expected and is appreciated across the board.

I don't have an issue with discussing issues that are "off topic." This is a forum afterall. A free exchange of ideas and opinions. As long as people are respectful, I enjoy reading their posts regarding matters of finances and anything else. I guess that if something strays too far off subject, then one of the moderators could lock the thread or move it to a different area. but that isn't my call.Brian
