  • Is anyone out there a single stay at home parent?

I am a single parent of 3. I work outside the home in the telecommunications industry and basically, HATE my job. I have been at the same company for 20 + years. I used to love my job, but within the last 7 years, they have downsized so many times, each time dumping more work on us it is very very stressful. We have also had a change of management in the last 10 years, and my current supervisor is a person whom my ex once arrested (during the time frame we were still married) so you can visualise what I go thru at work. I make almost $48,000 a year--nothing else within 100 miles pays like this company does. Also, I have only a 2 year degree, not a 4 year, so finding another job has been very very difficult. Anyone have any ideas to get out of this rat race as far as a stay at home job? (I can't go back to school at the time, because I work swing shifts and would be missing classroom time) I have checked into online degrees, but am not sure I want to do that. Also, since I am a single parent, I can not go without carrying medical insurance and will need retirement benifits. Any ideas??

You can try one of the sales jobs such as Mary Kay, Avon or Pampered Chef or countless others. I hear these are good because you can pick the amount of time you want to commit to it. One of these you can probably start now part-time and work your way into full-time by adding my clients and referrals. You also get some tax benefits.

Not reallly but you havemy sympathy

some things you prolly already looked into:

work from home for yourself, on the side till it grows big enough, involve the kids, helps with their future education.

not spending the 48 grand you make, so you can save/ earn less someday (we don't make that much .)

My wife has recently started selling a product called Arbonne. They have various things including skin care and health care products. It takes time getting started, but it really does pay-off in the end. I know some people who use that as a full tim career. If you want any information let me know, and I will send her email to you.

Re: Is anyone out there a single stay at home parent?

I have to carry the insurance, so a lot of "selling" jobs, I am finding don't have health, dental and vision insurances. I can't go with out it-due to pre-existing health conditions, including a recent bout of cancer-which I BEAT!!. Right now, I am living as cheaply as I can, and doubling up on my house payments, which is the only bill other than utilities and the girls school tution that I have, except for a few medical bills,-(but those are just copays totalling under $100). If I keep doubling up on the housepayments, it should be paid off by 2007 (but I really want to sell and get a small farm for a bigger garden and more critters) . Once that is done, I can survive on less than half I make now. As a single (divorced) woman, though, I also need to consider its just me putting into retirement now also, so I am putting about 1/4 of each check into my retirement fund and 401k at work as well. So, basically I am making the bigger money, but am not bringing it all home to spend, if that makes sense. Drives my co-workers nuts that I brown bag it and walk to work part of the time instead of going out to eat with them everyday and spending anywhere from $5-$15. I do go out with them about once a month, and figure thats fine by me, as I plan to be out of that office long before they are, as they will still be paying for their lunches till they are 65!

I don't necessarily have any advice, but after reading your last post I have to say you sound like you've got your financial house in order.

It's hard, being in a job you don't want to be in. Can you stick with it for the next couple of years - until the house is paid off - and then look for something that might pay less but will be more enjoyable?

Re: Is anyone out there a single stay at home parent?

MLM, Multi Level Marketing, IE sell my wonderfull product for me, so I can make money off you.

Like the toys that I have, I have searched and searched, but many of them don't come without the MLM trap, also the amway type stuff, and any other home party thing. Dont get me wrong, I like my Pampered Chef baking stone, my tupperware storage, and my Jafra foundation. Absolutly love the Discovery Toys we have, but I don't like the whole system set up to get them.

If the products sell themselves, what do they need me for? And why does it cost so much? And why the constant, selll more, recrute more attitude? If the catolog is so wonderful, why do I have to pay for it? If the website will help me sell, making the company more money, along with my whole 'upline' why do I have to pay so much for it? If I will get so much out of the 'training' why does it cost so much? And the numebr one lie -EVERYONE wants/needs this. Not even everyone with kids needs toys!

I just think most of the companies make more from the sellers than from the product.

some websites, niether have I read in entirety:

Accurate information about multilevel marketing is not easy to get. Few publishers, editors, and broadcasters are willing to examine this topic in depth. Mo ...

A business analysis of four major systemic problems with MLM - 1) Market Saturation, 2) Pyramid Structure, 3) Morality and Ethics, and 4) Relationship Costs.

I tend to agree. I am not much of a "seller" unless it would be a product people come to me for.

Re: Is anyone out there a single stay at home parent?

I agree that you should do research into any MLM endeavor. I am not the cheerleader type that would force something down your throat. My wife has justed started this and she seems to love it. She is not really a salesperson either, but she believes in the product. I personally use the shaving cream and love it.

Enough of that. The reason I would check into Arbonne is that it is fairly new and I have heard nothing but positive things about it. They also don't paint a picture of money rolling in like there is no tomorrow. They take a realistic view of their business. They state upfront that there will considerable amount of legitimate hard work involved, and that this is not a get rich quick scheme.

Anyway, that is just my $.02.

Re: Is anyone out there a single stay at home parent?

I actually laugh at almost all MLM... the way they are set up is absolutely nuts! You have bust your rump to make a tiny sum and the people at the top are laughing all the way to the bank!

One good way to make money online is affiliate programs, but you need to be careful what you choose and you need to have money coming in before you quit your job.

An affiliate for those who don't know is basically like the Avon and Pampered chef things. They provide the product and you sell it for a certain commission.

Stay away from most envelope stuffing because it usually isn't envelope stuffing, it's close to mlm and pyramid schemes. Which is very close to what mlm are.

I have sympathy for you I really do. I was a single mom for YEARS!

One thing my sister in law does, she made an arrangement with her work to work from home. She didn't make as much, but she was working from home. If you do a lot with computers or telephones you might be able to do this.

You could look into those career schools that offer medical transcription, data entry and medical billing. I am sure there are more but you can do all those from home.

                        Good Luck!

You can find a work at home job but for the most part you would be an independent contractor and those jobs do not come with any benefits. The Work at home journal seems to have a good listing of legit telecommuting jobs but you would really need to research if they had any benes.

There are groups that benefit the self-employed for health insurance and if you are self employeed you can always still fund an IRA.
