  • How many times can they resubmit a bounced check??

UGGGH -- I had a major snafu a couple of weeks ago in which I was double-charged for a car repair. I eventually got the money back, but not until after my mortgage (OF COURSE) check bounced. It was re-submitted, but, thanks to alllll the overdraft fees that resulted from the original overdraft, bounced again. So my understanding was a check can only be presented twice. Therefore, in order to avoid being 30 days overdue with my mortgage payment, I made another payment. Now TWO payments have cleared my account, because the original was submitted a THIRD time.

I thought there was a limit on how many times this could happen. I've got 10 transactions outstanding and I'm hosed again. But I haven't bounced a check in so long maybe the rules changed? of course, my bank (BofA) is closed today so no help there.

Can anybody help? I just got paid and the whole amount has now been used up -- terrific!

As I recall from my former career as a bill collector (now retired), in California a check that bounces NSF can be redeposited twice after it bounces, but most lenders won't even try it the second time. Instead, they will demand a money order or cashiers check as a replacement.

BTW if the check was returned stop payment or forged, it cannot be redeposited at all.

    Hope this helps.

In Missouri the limit is twice. Or at least, it used to be when I had my own business (until 2004)
