  • What do you think of this? (charity related)

I got an e-mail from the alumni association of my medical school. It said "Seasons Greetings. Click here to view our holiday slideshow." I clicked and watched a very nice slideshow showing first vintage school photos and then current ones in various categories like research, community service, etc. I thought it was very nice until the last slide which read, "Click here to donate now." That's how this "greeting" ended.

Personally, I found that in very poor taste, and I'm not easily offended. Must they beg for money at every possible opportunity? So much for "seasons greetings" or "Happy New Year" or any of that nonsense. Just hand over the cash.

I sent back an e-mail saying pretty much what I just wrote. I also said it is no wonder that more of us don't actively support the school and that just once it would be nice to receive a greeting that wasn't a fund-raising plea in disguise.

Am I over reacting? Or do you agree that a holiday greeting should be just that - a greeting and good wishes?

Yeah, I have to agree. I only hear from my school when they want money (at least a few times per year). I handed over a "mandatory" $500 donation to get married in the chapel on my college campus. I didn't mind paying a fee for using the building - I did mind that they insisted it was a donation, but said you could not get married there unless you paid it.

      disneysteve,
That is too funny--I wonder if colleges have a fund raising convention where they learn different ways to solicit funds. DH received an email from one of his alumni associations yesterday and it was exactly the same format! There were various pictures of the campus and students in the snow (nice holiday scenes).
As we were watching the slide show, I kept thinking when are they going to ask for a donation? Sure enough, it was there on the last slide. I really didn't find it offensive. I think a lot of different charities make a pitch just to remind you they are out there before the tax year closes out.

I get annoyed at businesses sending me Christmas/holiday cards as if they really care about me when all they really want is for me to do business with them again.

This thread made me go check my email.

I'm not sure I'd be bothered by the solicitation like that. Guess I expect as much.
