  • Please be careful what you post in your blog

Respectfully, I read through a lot of you guys' blogs, and some of them have a lot of personal and potentially liable information. I know we're all anonymous, and I'm usually more paranoid than most, but please think about the information you post because it may come back to haunt you.

I won't bring up specifics, but if someone were able to link your computer to your screen name, then they can potentially bring in anything you post.

The rule of thumb I use is pretend that a judge reads everything I post. Everything!

If that makes you uncomfortable then perhaps you should not commit the subject matter to writing.

Sorry to be paranoid. Please be safe and protect yourself.

Huh? Are you suggesting bloggers are admitting to crimes?

What scares me are the childcare people on craigslist who post pictures of their children--then they tell where the live!

Hmm, I don't know of any examples that are incriminating off the top of my head, but I am at least fairly certain that my ex reads my blog. So, I try keep that in the back of my mind when I write. But really, I am also quite aware how optimized both this forum as well as the blogs are for search engines.. which is really a compliment to Nate and Jeffrey as I believe that's what they had intended. However, when it comes to privacy, it's quite an unforgiving environment.

Always a good tip, both in your blogs and everywhere. There is another board that I'm active on and when I first started there, I didn't know any other users (or didn't think I did). I gradually discovered that several people I know IRL are also active on that board. I haven't run into that here, but I don't doubt that it could happen (especially since I tell so many people about the great advice available here).

Not directly, but sometimes too much info isn't a good thing.

I always try to play devil's advocate when I post. What happens if someone was trying to convict me of something? Could they use what I just posted against me somehow?

I don't think anyone is admitting to murder or anything like that, but there may be legal complications that the average poster may not be aware of.

I know that a lot of cops browse our local forums looking for opportunities to break up meets and profile certain people.

You don't have to be paranoid but please do put some thought into your posts. Please be safe and enjoy the holidays.

Oh I know I am traceable. I figure if I won't say it to someone's face, I won't say it anywhere else. Course, as I am a rather blunt individual, I still tend to speak my mind freely. In fact, the majority of my posts look just like the conversations I have held with people.

InDebtinDC, it would seem that we are kindred spirits.

How can I be careful of what I say if I am not aware that there may be legal complications? Day in and day out I try to conduct myself ethically, so I think that I am blameless. If the law happens to conflict with my ethics, then I suppose I would have to take the consequences. But legal problems as a result of me revealing myself is the remotest thing from my mind.

I imagine many people change some of the details when posting here, rather than being totally upfront. But I think they do that for anonymity and "safety," not to deceive, and not to withhold details for which they could be prosecuted.

Remember that little solo trip you took just a short while ago? I literally live minutes from the hotel (where you posted) you were staying. That and the vacation pics wouldn't have made it too difficult.......well, we are all nice people here after all.

I came close to commenting on it but thought again. Firstly, I didn't want to freak you out and have you thinking I was some sort of nut job and secondly, I didn't want the entire internet population narrowing down my location. Hey, I'm afraid of nut jobs, too!

So, InDebtInDC, thanks for the warning. Crazier things have happened.

Several of you figured out where my rental house is located-wasn't hard--Missouri, college town and air force men...But, I don't live in that part of the state anymore and that town has over 8000 rental houses in it, so it would take one awhile to track me down...
