internet service without landline

I'm ready to fire my cable company because they're providing me crappy (on and off at random moments) internet service at a high cost. And I'm sick of calling tech support on a daily basis.

I can easily go satellite for TV, but internet's another story. I have no landline phone, and I don't plan on installing one (I feel that would be taking about 5 steps backwards) because I would never use it and it would be one more bill, plus I would have to pay extra for privacy.

Does anyone know of any reliable internet services that I could get without a landline phone? I've heard Clark HOward talk about Clearwire, but unfortunately it's not available in my area (I'm in NJ despite what my profile says)

Can anyone here give me any suggestions?

I'm on At&t's plan. I did need to sign up for a basic land line ($9 a month) in order to also get DSL. I pay a total of $44 a month for internet and I have no problems with my connection.

I highly doubt there is currently DSL that you can buy without a phone line for cheap.

Installing a phone line is not an option for me. I don't want to pay for something I'll never use that's taxed out the wazoo. Plus I don't want my number in ANY phone book, and I don't feel I should have to pay extra for it.

ETA I've been without a landline for about the last 5 years or so. IT's only been a problem since I moved to NJ in the last few months.

Dry loop DSL means you do not pay for phone service, just the DSL.

everything I've searched on "naked dsl" (ie no phone line) seems to only be available in the south.

Call up all the ISPs in your area and those with nationwide plans and ask if they would offer dry loop.

I actually ran into this problem in my area as well. Cable really is the only option for people with no landlines, which is weird because I live in a big city. Basically, it would cost me the same to pay for a landline and dsl as it does to pay for my current cable modem.


*Okay, just checked again. Qwest finally has service without a landline available in my area now. So, when we finally move again I may do the DirectTV with dsl package from Qwest. In fact, I may use it as a bargaining chip if Comcast tries to raise my rates. Its not enough though to justify switching now, especially since its slower internet.

When my parents still lived in small town Midwest (no cable or DSL available), they had high speed satellite internet. They used a local small town provider, but I would think this service would be available elsewhere.

I don't now if it's an option for you, but we have satallite service with Digis, hubby grumbled a couple of times....but he's a computer geek and it just wasn't fast enough for him...but we didn't want to pay more for the faster service. It's $35 a month for us.

I have the same problem with shady internet service. I recently got into the whole wifi thing and found a tower very close to me which I can use for free.

I had same problem with cable internet service. Both of us work and we have internet phone. When I could not get in touch with my kids all day because our home internet was down, I decided to switch internet provider. Only option available for me was Verizon Fios at 34.95 last year. I think they raised prices for new accounts to something like 39.95 but ever since then, I have not had any downtime for the phone, except when VOIP co was having problems. Regular DSL, unlike Fios, requires phone service.
