Does anyone have suggestions on ways to protect my house from burglars? There have been a number of burglaries in our area and two on the street I live. I can't afford a security system, but there must be other ways to help protect my house or at least make it less likely that they will choose my home. Any suggestions?

A dog?
You're after the noise and a startle factor so a dog can provide both.
But if feeding him/her is too much:
You can get sensors that you can install in your windows and at your door, that sound an alarm when they are triggered. They don't actually call the police as a security system would, but they would make an audible sound that might scare off any burgulars. Check out your local home fix-it-up store.
If you have a neighbor who has a security system ask them if you can have an extra yard sign from their company. My security systems information states that the sign alone has proven to be a deterrent. Don't know how true it is, but it wouldn't hurt.

I would also suggest walking around the house and doing a check to see that it would be a less desirable subject for a burglary. For example, are bushes short so that an individual could not be easily concealed? Do you have motion-sensored lights? (These are not too expensive, and burglars definitely do not want to be spotted!) I think one in the front and back is a a good idea. I agree with the neighborhood watch too! Make it more difficult for these creeps so they get caught or give up! (I don't want to say go somewhere else, because I don't wish it on anyone...)
As for a dog...I have a Rottweiler/lab mix and he's my built-in system. No strangers need to know what a big baby he really is ~ his bark is intimidating! Feeling safe is invaluable.

Re: protecting my house
Put up a beware of dog sign, and a couple of bowls, a bone or toy and a chain-maybe even get a cheap used doghouse or make one from scrap lumber. Make it look like the dog is temp. inside the house. If you get something new, don't leave the box outside the house advertising that you just got a new TV, VCR or whatever. Crush the box. If you park outside, lock your car. Don't be predictable. Leave lights on timers if you are out of for the evening. I keep my cell phone charger next to my bed. If someone cuts my phone line and breaks in during the night, I can still call 911 from my cell phone. Leave your purse and keys in your room at night-not hanging by the door where someone can break 1 pane of glass and reach in to get them. I have sensor lights outside. You do have to experment with them at first as if you set them too high, a cat can turn it on. Put up an NRA sticker or Sherriff ASSOC sticker in the window. They may think twice if they have reason to believe you have a gun in the house. If you are a single female, ask a male relative if you can have his old shoes to leave outside by the door-makes it appear their is a man around. Don't leave tools out that a burgler could use to break in with--such as a ladder to access 2nd floor windows, hammer, screwdriver, crowbar...don't hide keys outside-leave it with a trusted neighbor-my spare key is in my desk at work-my office is open 24 x 7, and only 4 blocks away, so if i get locked out, I can walk to work to get it.
