Ima, you are reading my mind....we asked for our DIL's homemade fudge for this Christmas since the kids are strapped for cash. And we like to give restaurant certificates to the kids because they love to eat out and can't really afford to as much.

magazine subscriptions, part of a bill paid off (ie make a payment to my cellphone company for $25), etc.

A charity gift only works for the right person, and IMO the charity needs to match the interests of the recepeint (ie giving to a church on behalf of an athiest is inappropriate, but giving to the SPCA on behalf of a pet lover is appropriate).

Just today I bought every female on my list a nice 3 qt cookpot for $8.99. I am going to include a homemade soup cookbook with easy favorites...as well as a nice wooden stir spoon. Hopefully a frugal idea that will make life a little more frugal for the recipients too!

For children I'd do learning toys or make a blanket. I just made some for a couple kids I know and they loved them! For adults I'd make an afghan or give a scrapbook with the pictures in it of something we'd done together. For DH boss we usually give a basket of coffee stuff, chocolate spoons, beans, special cookies and a nice mug. I don't give cash or gift cards although I will tuck a couple into my grandsons stockings this year since they are of dating age and their is a fast food place within walking distance of where they live.

My time. Maybe a GC for me to come help them paint for 4 hours, or childcare while they go out along with a couple of movie tickets.

Although it may be impersonal, a cash gift, or gift certificate is the most universal.

For a spouse a romantic dinner for two or maybe a massage.

                        To receive or to give?

For me nothing beats books, video games or cd's. I can use them over and over again.

For others, it depends. My coworkers who are starbuck addicts loved getting gift cards since they habitually run out of money by the end of the month. My immediate family gets edible stuff since they love food. I even sent my father a Bulliwinkle and Moose season DVD since he loved that show but its never on. I even have a friend that I only get cute stuffed animals or figurines for because she wasn't very materialistic and those were the only "things" she really appreciated.

I suppose my answer is, anything that has personal meaning for the person you are giving it to.

I'd take a gift card from Amazon. I'm a big reader and there's a lot of books that I can learn from to improve myself and my income. Plus for orders over $25 you get free shipping!

Hmm, interesting. One might be able to see a pattern here.

Yup, this would be the same coworker that liquidated her retirement savings because she HAD to buy furniture.
