MONOPOLY Brand Electronic Banking Edition- Product Detail

I saw a commercial for this the other day - they've taken the paper money out of monopoly and replaced it with debit cards. What do you think - educational for kids or just another way to disconnect the idea of spending money with earning money?

I think there's a lot to be said for the actual handing over of money (even fake money) to another person, as there is for receiving a fistful of cash for making good decisions.

Saw the commercial. My initial thought was that it was ridiculous. But then again, this is reality. Cash is becoming obsolete despite the efforts of the Envelopers out there. Why not let kids realize if you swipe your card too many times, eventually you go broke.

I saw that commercial too and nearly died. That said, I see actual cash once a month if that so I suppose its appropriate. And its probably a really good idea that people realize that the numbers on your card that you are spending is actual money and when you run out, you are out. I had a friend whose checkbook was taken from her by her parents because she would write checks when she had no money left in her checking account.

Me, I have the opposite problem. I am FAR more likely to spend cash then put things on my debit card. I can't justify $3 for a hamburger on the card but I can if I have a $20 bill. I suppose this explains why I don't give myself a cash allowance, lol.

It reminds me of going to a fast food restaurant and a cashier because of a malfunction in the machine - not being able to count out change.

I guess in all reality because of the times in which we live that we should be doing both. Occassionally, I'll try to add doing math without a calculator just in case. It is goodagood exercise for the brain.

I agree that to be able to play it both ways --cash or debit card-- would be ideal. One of the best things about games like monopoly for younger kids is how it strengthens their ability to add and subtract using the cash. I'm guessing that with the debit card version each player has an electronic device to use with the cards, thus the math thinking is done for them. But there would be some value in demonstrating that debit card money is not magically endless.

Well, to be honest, I used to have to play this way often. I don't know if I lost some of the Monopoly money or what, but I never had enough to finish a game. So we'd "deposit" money back into the Bank and record it on paper. Not exactly the same, but pretty similar.

We would do this all the time with Payday because we'd play 12-18 months and we'd always run out of money!!

But at least you were doing the math yourself on paper instead of relying on a machine! This game actually comes with a little card swiper.

From my understanding you can play both ways. The ones with the debit cards still come with the cash.
