  • what would you do?

I have a friend that cheats to get things on discount. I think it is criminal behavior, but she thinks that it is perfectly normal. She goes into stores and damages the product enough that it would be hard to sell, but not so much that it can't be repaired. She'll put food stains on clothes and tear open packaging. Then she will ask the store manager for a discount since the item is damaged and usually gets it. If they don't, then she won't buy it.
What would you do in this situation?

Not go shopping with her??...I agree with you...it is criminal behaviour, she's purposefully damaging a product....but I doubt you can convince her to stop...unfortunately for her, at some point, especially if she keeps going to the same stores, she'll get caught...

Unfortunately, she is probably addicted to this behavior, and therefore doesn't see anything wrong with it. Just one of the problems is that she could get in some serious trouble. Many stores have cameras and plain-clothed security. Plus, if she's working so hard at cheating others, it can surely be expected to come back and sting her hard. Why not just go through the effort of finding things on sale or at a thrift store? Why would anyone WANT something damaged or stained just to make it cheaper? That logic is flawed to me.

With people being banned from returns at Walmart and the like, it's only a matter of time before someone else catches on to her criminal behavior. (or, until she loses friends...)

      Hoping for her recovery.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to never go shopping with her. When she gets caught and she will eventually, you do not want to be arrested as an accomplice.

This is terrible. I hope she isn't a professing Christian.

Oh wow, that is bad. I would have to mention how she is driving the price up for honest people, and so never go shopping with her.

I wouldn't go shopping with her either. I agree it's criminal. It's sad that honest people actually end up paying more for things like that.

I assume that you have already tried to talk to her and tell her that you don't approve. If you haven't, I think I would mention it along with the fact that her actions end up costing everyone in the long run with higher prices.

If that doesn't work, I would avoid shopping with her as many have suggested. I would imagine that shopping with someone like that wouldn't be much fun.

when she asks... tell her the truth...
you don't need to be associating yourself with someone of that stature

                    Re: what would you do?

I'm answering only for the points now. I agree with everyone else, don't shop with her and tell her why you won't shop with her. She won't change unless something life altering stops her and I wouldn't want to be around her when she gets what she's been giving. This is a horrible habit.

Turn her in. She'll learn quick.

I agree that you should avoid shopping with her.

I guess you could also try the old "negative peer pressure" thing on her but I doubt it would work. Ask her how she would feel if she were the owner of the business and she found customers doing this in her store? If it's okay for her to do this, why not everyone?

I do hope that she does get caught if nothing more than to scare her and to get her to change her ways.

I would avoid shopping with her as well. Telll her that it is wrong and you do not want to be arrested for stealing because basically that is what she is doing.

I've tried talking with her, but she doesn't seem to care. I do try to avoid shopping with her and have done so for awhile. The main problem is that when I go to visit her, she brings out all the things she has bought and tells me all about how she got a great deal on them. I really don't want to hear about it, but she always has to "brag" about how she gets away with it.

ick, that might be a friendship better left. That or learn the art of quick subject change. I never did learn, I am good at the rude kind though . I do it to my Mom all the time.
