  • Need to Buy a New Bed Soon

DH and I did a major repair to the boxspring on our bed yesterday but it won't last more than a year. We are starting to research beds and I was wondering what you all thought were the best mattresses in your experience? I'd particularly like to know experiences with tempurpedic, posturepedic, and sleep number, but also good regular type mattresses. Thanks.

I am not sure on those fancy ones, but we got a mattress with the pillow top thing on both sides (is that what it is called? Basically an extra layer of cushioning). The thing is to die for - I could sleep all day on it.

Maybe you don't want something so cushy though.

If you go into a "Matress Firm," located all over the United States, make sure to talk down the price. Unless you are buying manufacture direct, you have wiggle room and should come prepared to negotiate the price accordingly. Do NOT buy the "extras" which claim to make the bed "stain resistant" or "spill proof." They usually try to upsell you on these options in the $75-100 range, but only cost about $10 to treat the mattress. Most of this option goes right into the sales assocaite's pocket. If you are truely worried about stains or spills, then pickup a can of ScotchGuard (local hardware store) and treat it before you start sleeping on it.

I bought a simmons beautyrest about a month ago. Its firm with a little bit of cushion on the top. The sticker price was $1400 but the manager gave it to me for $989. I didn't even ask for a lower price, he just came out and gave me that figure. Its a great bed, worth every penny.

I've been researching beds also. We were particually interested in the sleep number bed. I read the reviews and a lot were horrible, so we decided against it. We are still uncertain as to what to get.

Jonathan at MyMoneyblog.com wrote a 2 part series on Mattress Shopping. Here's a link to the second post (which has an link to the first post in the text):

I found it very helpful. Make sure to read the readers comments, too.

So I had asked my brother in law the very same question since I may need to buy a bed soon. He absolutely loves a godo bed and his "extra" bed at their house is wonderful. He is also very frugal in his purchases. His advice to me:

Always wait till there is a 50% off sale. Period. There is always one going on. Go whent hey have a 50% off sale.

When you go the sale you need to lay on the bed at least 10 minutes so you know what you are getting. Be really sure what you are getting.

During the sale you should always be able to get these items.
Free Delivery (usually a rebate you have to send in) - make sure its actually into your house and not just to the curb
                  Free disposal of old bed
Free Frame (if you need it)

Its very difficult to comparison shop as product numbers and names are different for each store. You can try and search by the number of coils, etc.

Other trick is if you have a matress factory in your city. My first bed (which I have had since 1996, has made 3 moves cross country and is still in great condition) was purchased at a local matress factory. I went in, laid on the 11 different firmness beds, chose the size, fabric and other "accessories" and had it custom made and delivered to my parents house for 440 dollars. Mind you that was 10 years ago but you can see my point.

The absolutely most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on is made by Jamison Bedding. Their website is jamisonbedding.com. The last hotel we stayed at had these beds. We spent 3 nights there and it was so comfortable. I wrote down the name of the company, bed # and then contacted the hotel to try to find who made the mattress. You can order the mattress and they will deliver it to you. They generally make beds for hotels rather than individual consumers.

We bought a Chatham and Wells medium support. DH wanted the softer one, I wanted the firmer. We love it.

We specifically did not buy a temperpedic (even though I take my temperpedic pillow everywhere with me) because it can make you hot and I am at that point in my life where I don't need more heat!

CSCchin4's post is interesting as my daughter just reported sleeping on the most comfortable mattress ever at a Marriott hotel in the bay area. She forgot to find out what it was, I'm wondering if it was a Jamison?

There are tons of ways to save money, and and lot's of things you can buy cheap. But I don't think Beds (matresses) are things you should be frugal with. You are going to spend 1/3 of your entire life in it. Find one you like, and wait for the best deal possible for it, but don't settle for something else because it's cheaper. I like the temperpedic matresses the best. I don't think the no name brands that try to copy it are nearly as good. I do think temperpedic's are overpriced, but I'm willing to cut down in other areas of my life to eventually get one soon.

You may not like the Temperpedic, but get something quality. It will be better for you (health wise), and it will last longer.

If you really want to try out a mattress, call a mattress store up, and ask them when the slowest day and time usually is. Then go there with your own pillow, and lay down on them for a while to really get a feel for it. It sounds silly, but you have to find out what you like, and laying on one for 2 minutes while a sales rep is talking to you is not the best way to find out.

You're extremely lucky, over $400 discount without even asking for it?
