  • Do you buy a newspaper?

Is it worth it to buy a daily newspaper anymore? Much of what you see in a newspaper (for example, NYT, Chicago Trib, Sun Times) is available online. And the news stories that don't appear online, I can normally find from other sources: local and national TV news websites, and specialty news blogs.

Even magazines don't seem to offer much more than their web sites offer.
I read Kiplinger magazine and end up seeing the exact same stories and features on their web site. Any thoughts?

I buy a Sunday paper for the coupons.

My family is addicted to the paper. I browse every section (& clip coupons), DH reads the sports page & comics, DS10 reads the sports page, and DD13 reads the comics everyday. If I didn't get the paper, my son wouldn't read anything

I could probably give it up except for the Sunday edition, as I can get all the news I need online. The rest of the family would not be happy.

I get virtually all of my news information online. Occasionally, I will watch TV news but the typical "talking heads" approach to scripted (and slanted) news is unsettling and annoying. More direct to the question: No, I do not buy newspapers.

Nope, my family used to buy the paper mainly for the coupons but not anymore.

Yes, definitely we subscribe to our city newspaper.
Not only do I get the weekend coupons, I also get the sales circulars that come on Monday and Wednesday.
Further, whenever one of the local stores is having a clearance or going-out-of-business sale it gets advertised in the paper.
Lastly, on Thursday the paper prints a weekend activity section and I can look through that for all the free entertainment going on in the area.

We just buy a paper on the weekends at a convenience store nearby. It's cheaper than getting it delivered.

We get the Sunday paper only and have for many years. We use it for the tv guide, the coupons and the store sale circulars. I don't have the time or need to get the daily paper. I'd never read it and all the info is available on tv or online.

I get 3 day delivery(Friday, Sat and Sun) for 1.25 a week. Cheaper than buying it at the local store.

Buy Sunday and Monday papers for the grocery ads.

I get the paper daily. Then after I gut it (take out all the ads and coupons) and read it, it gets twisted into kindling if its a double page or left flat for single pages for starting fires with. We burn wood for heat six months out of the year. It serves 3 purposes for me.

We get weekend paper for the coupons. I tried to stop but dh is insistent. HE insists he saves more money than we spend on certain coupons (& more importantly the Fry's ads...).

It used to be Sat/Sun, and they keep adding days and charging more. Now we get it every day except Wednesday. That's the "weekend paper." Being more of an environmentalist I am a little peeved since we don't want the paper every damn day. But we did the math and they charge so much for one paper we pay less for practically the whole dang week than if we went out and grabbed weekend papers.

So this is why we get the "daily" paper.

I have the paper delivered every day. It shows up by 6am so I'm able to scan it and check the baseball box scores over breakfast every morning. Nice way to start the day. I also like it during the school year as it covers local sports much more thoroughly than tv stations. So, yeah, it's worth the $14/mth for me.

TV news though (local and national) is something I could do without. Sensationalistic, sound bite driven, no real meat to it.

Unfortunately newspapers are rapidly losing circulation due to multiple other ways to get your news today.

The only kind of newspaper that has not yet been replaced by TV, radio or internet news is the local, hometown newspaper that covers a single town, or just a few towns. Like my weekly paper. They cover a niche that the big time players can't match, local community news.

I subscribed for years, but this winter I didn't renew when the subscription was up in February. The last month I had the paper delivered, I was unable to get it since it was thrown each day onto a solid sheet of ice.

Anyway, I was going to start again once I moved to my new house, but I've gotten used to reading it online. So, I get all the same news, but don't have to pay. And don't have to keep stacks of papers for recycling.

I do miss all the ads on Sunday. But most of those I check online anyway.
