  • Bill changer.. Fraud?

I usually get quarters from bill changer at laundry. Yesterday I re-count my quarters and I found a Canada quarter . I don't know where I got it. It is also possible from grocery but I only made 2 times in last 2 months and I usually use check. I live in Michigan.

So does anybody have experience with getting Canada quarter instead of US quarter. If you get, from where? I am curious to know if it could happen in bill changer.

Btw, can I use that in laundry machine which accept quarters .

You've never gotten foreign coins before? Back in the days when I used cash, I'd end up with a Canadian penny or something every once in a while -- in my change from a restaurant or whatever. I just assumed everyone experienced that...

EDITED TO ADD: Is it fraud? I guess so -- but not by the coin change machine. This is a case where someone took advantage of the fact that the machine couldn't distinguish between an American quarter and a Canadian one. If you turn around and put the coin back into the washing machine and get away with it, are you committing fraud?

I don't think there is anything you can do about it. It's not worth a trip to an institution that can exchange money.

Being pretty far from the border, I don't often get Canadian coins. But one time I got a handful of quarters in my change and did not notice till later. I was pretty irked at that. Being so far from the border, though, the coins are a curiosity to children here. I can at least give them to kids who think of them as special and exotic.

I think the custom is to keep passing along the Canadian quarter to the next person without them realizing it.

My thought exactly. This happens from time to time. Coins are the same size. Lots of people travel back and forth between Canada and the US. The coins circulate around. It isn't uncommon at all. I just toss them on my dresser with the intent of eventually getting back to Canada and spending them. I suppose I could just add them to my regular coins for when I take them to the bank. If the coin counting machine doesn't know the difference, that would be okay with me. Is it fraud? Probably, though I don't I'd be sent away for passing a Canadian quarter. I've even gotten Canadian coins from the bank when I got a roll of coins.

No.. I was in a southern state and just move into MI about 2 months ago... Also almost all shops I went there accept CC. Anyway as Joan.of.the.Arch said, I will keep it and give it to a kid as sth exotic. ..I am really surprised that disneysteve even got them from bank.. that is funny.

Or someday I may able to give back to Canada when I visit there... but I won't revenge them with US quarter...

I thought this was pretty common too. I know it is for me.

The link below is the yahoo currency converter chart. a quarter .25 in USD is equivlent of .2633 CAD I wonder what they do in Canada since many Americans travel there too?

we have a whole pile of Canadian stuff, quarters, nickels, even a dollar.

Not to mention I hunt up other countries coins, the kids love raiding our coin 'collection' I considered getting rid of it to pay off debt, but I think the educational value plus the sentimental (many from actual trips outside the USA) makes it worth keeping. and on the Canadian, if I ever knew a person going there I would weed out all the dups and pass em on.

Davlat, in Michigan, I don't think your Canadian coins are going to seem exotic to any kids. They probably see them all the time. They've probably been taught to see them more as an annoyance since they occur frequently in change and are not strictly useable in MI.
They're "exotic" where I am 'cause we are far from the border and don't see them often at all.

I found 100 yen once. It was a real let down to find it was worth less than a dollar.
