Vacuum cleaner help

Mine died on me this weekend Does anyone have a vacuum cleaner that they just love? I'm going to head to consumer reports to see their recs, but thought I'd ask here to see if someone has fallen in love with theirs.

I'm not a person who likes to clean a lot, so if it works really well, I would be willing to pay more for it.

I had dirt devils for awhile-each lasted exactly 1 year, and died. I then switched to hoover--i have 2-1 upstairs and 1 down and love them both. one has a bag (which I empty and reuse over and over with the help of duct tape) and the other has the cannister--it is great if you have kids and you vacume up a toy part--you can see it in the cannister to retreive it.

I have 2 vaccums myself. My rainbow(rexair) personal favorite, but its needing to be worked on, and a canister vacuum. which im using til my rainbow gets fixed. It will be expensive,140.00 but well worth it to me. My kids have sinus issues and wet dust dont come back out, its mud and goes to the garbage. using the spring oil smells so good too. I miss using the vinyl bag with it, to freshen up pillows and bedding between washes, kills germs too.

Can I add a request to know how well your vacuum works on loooong hair?

Ours died long ago, due to hair winding around the roller and gunking it up, we de-haired it for a time, but that was more trouble than it was worth, so we use a shop vac..no roller, but then not cleaning as well.

I saw one that was actually a steam cleaner, the 'roller' was a set of round wheels, I keep wondering if it would work on long hair, but afraid to pay the 300 for it just to find out. I also think 300 is astronomical but if it works and keeps working I would pay it.

I have a Dyson it works well make sure you have something that can reach the ceiling I use it weekly to remove cobwebs and spiders and the steps It reaches all the way up. I think consumer reports may have rated an electrolux the best but not sure whatever it was it was considerably less then the dyson but the dyson does work well.

Another Dyson fan here. I used to burn up vacuums once a year but I have had my Dyson for about 4 years. We have the basic DC07 and it is awesome. We now have a dog and if I ever have to replace it I will buy the animal verson.

We have/love a Kenmore Progressive with a Hepa filter because our children are very sensitive to allergies. It is a bit heavy, but has a miniature vacuum attachment that makes it great vacuuming the stairs. PrincessPerky, I have had problems with this attachment getting long hair caught in it and it sometimes is a pain to pick it out, but overall I like the benefit of it more. This vacuum also has an "Inteliclean" feature on it that increases the suction power when it senses more dirt being sucked up.

i have dogs, and I was killing all the regular store ones at about one or more a year. VERY ANNOYING. I went next to the Dyson Animal and it worked great....until I meet the Kirby! Expensive yyeeesss!!! But it's been years now and it's still going strong. The long hair was an issue with both. I just 'detail' the vaccuum a few times a year and cut all the long hair wrapped about the bar off. Sometimes I wonder why I am not bald!!! I have to do it at work once in a while to....lol.

I second gackle's opinion of the Kenmore Progressive. Love it!

Regarding the long hair issue, it's much easier to remove hair from the roller if you take scissors and cut the hair along the length of the roller first.

well i actually have a third tool that helps with that. I have that orange swiffer sweeper carpet flick and keeping my dog clean/brushed helps also. I have the 9.99 wally world special for coming out the long hairs.. Flick was only 15 dollars and extra pack of pads(12) with coupons. some dont like it, but kids loveeee to clean with it, and i dont have to beg them, they argue over whos turn it is. Just a suggestion, hope it helps. huggellzz

When we are referring to long hair...it is people hair. My hair is probably close to three feet long and gets wrapped around the beater bar rather then getting sucked up, so I have to take off the bar and cut it off a few times a year. Very annoying, and like I said...makes me wonder how I am not bald...lol. If you don't have really long hair you just don't realize how much of it you loose everyday. It much more noticeable when it's really long.

just wait till you have kids with long hair, and a husband with long hair..ugh, two or three times a year wasn't enough of a degunking to keep the last vacuum running, I degunked it once a month and it still died...

my bad that the assumption was an animal hair hun, sorry. I do have long hair, its almost mid back and im six foot tall, 3 ft up and 3 ft down.lol. So id say mine is at least 2 1/4 ft long. I use to have that prob, but i get a monthly protein pack and eat more pnut butter and eggs, my hairs been awesome since! Lack of protein is main prob with long hair. call the hospital in your neighborhood and ask to speak to thier nutritionist. Thats where i learned about it myself. I did not take in enough protein for my hair. When i was veryyyyyyy sick from my gall bladder, i was a vegetarian, I still appreciate the vegetarism side of me with a small piece of meat, since i went into the hospital this last time, feb 2007, with pnemonia,renal failure and onset adult diabetes, they had me see thier nutritionist and i have six month appts with her to update my status and menu changes i may need to adjust based on my last dr appts and tests run. I mean my hair got totally horse tail like from the back after it leaves the head, its protein. Your body needs what u do take in more, so your hair/nails suffer the loses. The only breakage i have anymore is brushing my hair and that stays on the brush and i pull it out over the garbage. If i could stand putting my hair up anymore at night, i wouldnt even have that, but i get such headaches from trying to do that. Im a tosser in bed, so i wake up with 2 ft of matting, u know?lol. It changed my hair alot, I saw advice somewhere that u use a diff type oil treatment weekly,jajoba,placenta,cholesterol, switching each week it helps. I paid 15 dollars at walmarts salon for a 3 pk of protein treatments, i couldnt find them on the shelves elsewhere, its by the same co that does those big red bottles of hair sprays, big sexy hair, then i buy vo5 hot oils and a tresseme and switch each week and once a month, i use paul mitchell teatree hair n scalp treatment. I wouldnt reccommend it to anyone with breathing probs. Its like using pure essential oils of teatree and peppermints. i paid 13.50 for that also at walmart salon. I have had that same bottle for over a year, and saved my bottles of the olive oil brand salon shampoo/cond, and refill those with dollar store stuff, it has pumps on it, like hand soap bottles but are a quart size. I got that on sale at wmart also, 20 for the set a quart of each shampoo/conditioner salon quality. The protein packs for 15 dollars i used over 3 months. Its an expense you may want to look into to save your hair. 2 vo5's for 7 dollars, protein 15 dollars tressemme 4 and mitchells tea tree 13.50. 39.50 for a minimum of 3 months use. I still have the teatree treatment, ive yet to buy a second bottle of that, so next go around with the hot oils/protein was only 26.50 for 3 months a total improvement on my hair, if you can wear yours up in bed at night, your looking at virtually no breakages.

We have a Dyson bought 2 years ago this February wouldn't trade it for any other vacuum.

I have severe dust mite allergies and I love my Eureka bagless because you can see how much crud you pick up - it's amazing! I feel it has more power than one with a bag but the only bad thing is when I dump it I always end up on prednazone because my sinuses go haywire. There may be someting to be said for the bags.

I would recommend that you spend more on a dyson because I believe you don't have to buy the filters for them. Mine are $30 a pop - I make my hubby blow it out with the air compressor but eventually you gotta replace it.

I have heard awesome about Dyson and will go with that - only because I can't afford a Kirby which my grandma swore by. She only had 2 of them in 50+ years and that's only because she traded the first one from the 50's for one that was self propelled.
