  • Tell Your 'I Found a Coin' Story Here

When our kids were little (only a couple years ago) we made a game of taking walks in the neighborhood to find coins. A veritable Treasure Hunt!

I still pick up coins on the ground, in the airport, on the job. Today it was $0.16.

Biggest find=$10.00 out at the landfill where I work. My husband wanted me to go back that night and see if there was some bag of money hurriedly thrown away by some illicit drug operation

I hope my kids find it quaint their old mom still finds a kick out of picking up pennies and more when they're grown and gone from the house.

    And you?

My dad reached down to pick up a penny once and wrenched his back. We joke to this day about how much that penny cost him in medical bills.

When I was young, I always would check the coin returns on payphones, vending machines, etc. to find change that was left behind. Usually, if I found anything it would be a nickel or dime. A couple of times, I hit the coin return lever and got a jackpot of coins. I don't remember the amounts but I know it was over a dollar more than once, and this was when I was a pre-teen in the 70s so that was a lot of money to me.

I pick up coins. I always look around when I'm in parking lots, etc. It is surprising how much you can pick up in a week. Most people don't bother to pick up nickels and dimes, even if they are the one's who drop them.

I look all the time, but I seldom find anything. Sure, I bend over to pick up a penny!

I pick them up and now my son, who is 5, loves to find coins and put them away. Hooray!

Aside - I used to work at a grocery store and always collected wheat pennies. I'm about to look online and see if any of them are worth anything. Off to eBay they go! Hopefully I'll have lucked-out on one of them.

I used to pick up change at the toll booth. People throw their money at the basket and miss all the time. Now we have an I-Pass, so I don't stop at the toll booths anymore.

I usually point it out to my 3 year old. He puts it in the church bank or gives it to the store owner if we are inside. Most of the time they tell him to keep it and then he can put it in the church bank. I once found a $20.00 bill on the street. You can bet I always slowed down in that intersection after that!

I don't know what has been happening lately, but ever since I meet my noe husband I've been finding money. I told him it's him, he insists it's me...whatever it is, I really don't want it to stop.

I found $30.00 in the Wal-mart parking lot--woohoo...maybe I should have turned it in, but it was in the parking lot.

I found $20.00 blowing through the mall parking lot, I was driving, so I stopped quickly and sent hubby to be out to chase it down.

I found $5 left behind at one of those Wal-mart self check out things, the lady told me to keep it, so I did.

Hubby and I found $1 on a walk the other day.

And just last night, at the Wal-mart self check out someone left their .06 of change, so I told the little kid behind me to take it. He and his dad said thanks. Since the amounts keep going down, I am worried my luck has run out....but boy it sure has been nice. Before all this started it had been YEARS since I had found any money. I'm personally hoping the luck stays.

I never find money but we stopped for gas outside of LA just a couple of weeks ago. Gas was almost a whole dollar per gallon more expensive than back home, but not to fear we found $15 on the ground by the pump. We only filled up 8 gallons or so so came out ahead.

My 3yo son finds change all the time - loves it.

When I go to the self-checkouts, there is usually change there because people forget to take their change. I also find money in the parking lots of grocery stores as well. It's amazing how much money it adds up to over time.

MoneyBags: Maybe you aren't picking up any money but you are most likely saving yourself at least $.25 when you use the Sunpass (is what we call it).

                        non-cents

I used to work in downtown Chicago near a very popular popcorn seller.
The floor traders from the commodities exchanges used to go in there and buy popcorn and throw the coin change on the street. Not only was it incredibly annoying, it also meant that homeless folks camped outside the place waiting for the pennies to fall. The traders wouldn't actually GIVE the money to the homeless guys, they'd throw it on the street so they had to pick it up. Very rotten behavior.

Something similar also happened when I worked in downtown Minneapolis--I wonder if was a 1980s fad? I haven't seen it happen in years.

I usually find money everytime I go to the grocery store. Aldi's-by the carts. I think people drop it while digging for a quarter to get their cart. Once I found a 20 dollar bill in the park.

One of our cheap forms of entertainment when travelling is to put a penny down in a crowded area, sit back, and guess who is going to pick it up. We usually do this when we are taking a break from walking around so much. We started it in DC with the kids. A good frugal form of entertainment.
