Is this a conventional ball mouse or optical mouse?
If it's a ball mouse, I would get rid of it and buy a cheap optical.
If it's an optical... then I would also invest in a mouse pad with wrist rest. Among other things, they can sometimes help improve the responsiveness of optical mice.
Hope that helps.

I can't imagine why you mouse is only lasting a month or two. We've had ours for years. It is a Kensington optical mouse with a scroll wheel. I don't remember what it cost but I know it was cheap, probably around $20.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I have a logitech marble mouse it. I have had it for about five years DH and DS both use it as well. I love it because I don't need a mouse pad and although it has a cord it doesn't move.
(you use your thumb to move the ball, instead of moving the mouse to move the ball underneath). I love it!

does the ball get stuck? If so you can take it out and clean it and clean the err..rollers inside.
I vote for a umm thumb wheel...cause when the mouse holds still my kids damage it less. Not sure if I am describing it right though. the ball is on top...the mouse never moves, the ball does to move your 'pointer'. I also have a 'scroll wheel' that moves the page up or down without having to touch the ball.
(should'a seen GMC yesterday at the library with a traditional mouse, he didn't know how to scroll the page down. He is 5 he will get it)

ty all for ur advice, our radio shack burned here about 2 years ago, but they just reopened heading out of town. Im going there tomorrow to see all my options. its a basic roller mouse, and i did clean the roller, but it just goes side to side most of the time. down isnt too hard, but up, oy vey! Thank goodness for tab arrow and enter, lol.

did you do a hard scrape off the lint off of the insides of all 4 rollers? the build up will cause problems, and a general cleaning wont help it - you have to get your fingernails inside and scape it back and forth until every last bit of build up is off. On my desktop, I've never used anything but a cheap old white mouse .. I've only had 3 mouses in the past 13 years (and I've always been a heavy computer user -- sometimes upwards of 40+ hours per week, especially when I first started my website back in 2002).

Don't think I'm crazy here, but my mouse wasn't working...it would in the morning and evening, but not in the afternoon. It would work side to side, but not up and down. I finally figured out why: THE SUN WAS ON THE MOUSEPAD !?!? , and going side to side, it was in the shade, but if I went up, it wouldn't roll...maybe the heat changed the amount of friction?
Probably not your problem, but it was really strange.

Though the link I provided earlier represents some of the best available pricing, if you want to get a new mouse at a local store, at least hit a Office Depot for something like one of these @ $14.99. (or similar)

My previous response contained a Logitech optical for $7.99, but I noticed that it's for a PS/2 port.
This Microsoft optical is from is USB for only $9.99 if you buy before the end of this month. After that,it's $11.99.
