  • I got a refund of $2 from BOA!!

Finally, I was able to win $2 from BOA So this is how it happened, On Sunday I had to withdraw $40 to pay for my weekly food delivery guy (this guy delivers weekly meals so it saves me the time spent on cooking and its cheap). So i run up to the BOA ATM across the street. What a surprise, it is temporarily out of order and the next BOA ATM was 15 blocks away. So i go up to the Wells Fargo ATM right next door and come up with the usual crap of paying $2 extra. Given no choice and running out of time, I grudgingly take the cash.
Later that night I see my account and I have $42 withdrawn plus and additional $2 from BOA for non-BOA ATM use fee. I was pissed. $4 on a $40 transaction went into paying these banks especially when their ATM was down. For all i care, BOA could have an agreement with Wells Fargo on keeping their ATM down to gain these fees.
I logon to my BOA account and fire off an email giving them the time and location of the BOA ATM that was down and ask why I was to pay the $4 when it was their fault. couple of hours later, I get the standard response saying "the fees are charged for use of a non-BOA ATM and the owner of the ATM charging the other $2".
I reply back to that message and say that it is not my fault that their ATM was down and need the $4 refunded. They reply back with same response as above and say they cannot refund.
I reply again to the message and say that I have been a BOA customer for 2 yrs and have direct deposit with their bank and this is crazy that they treat me like this. I now say, just give me the damn $2 that you charged since the other $2 was from the owner of ATM. Again, i get the standard response that the non-BOA ATM use fee cannot be refunded.
I reply again to this message and say that as a matter of principle, I am tired of BOA and am going to move my account somewhere else and also pursue my case in a consumer court (i have no clue on what i would do... ). Again, met with the standard response.
Not willing to give up, I send another message saying "Stop sending me the standard response. try to read your customers request before you respond..See my request, YOUR ATM was down. It is not my fault and I want my $2 refunded. Try to read the lines before sending
    in your scripted answer. "
I logon later that night and low behold, i have a $2 credit sitting there. Now I agree its not much, but its one small battle I won by being persistent. I vouched to myself that I would bug them every day on this issue because I seriously went to use their ATM and it was down so it was no fault of mine. Just thought I would share this with you all

There's an interesting article in this month's Harvard Business Review about companies and the customers who hate them. The author theorizes that certain industries (he uses the cell phone, banking, and health club industries as examples) have realized how profitable it is to nickel and dime their customers with fees or have so many service plans that are unclear that customers wind up making bad choices that cost them money for over/underutilization of the service. The market for good customer service is growing at the same rate that these companies piss people off. The article says that ING Direct has capitalized on this market by offering savings accounts with no fees, minimums, etc. They are now the 4th largest thrift bank in the U.S. and is adding 100,000 new customers a month. (p. 82)

We have a savings account through them and checking through BOA. I've posted previously on here major problems we have with BOA - I think the next major hassle we have with them we'll be jumping ship to USAA or ING.

You were totally in the right to demand a refund. It's too bad they didn't have the decency to give you the $4. I can't imagine losing a customer over $4.

I think BOA is a terrible bank. But, I don't see how this was their problem. I think the $2 is a gift. Good for you for pushing your view on the issue but I don't think I would have given it to you.

You needed money (I assume you knew that your "weekly" delivery guy was coming) and couldn't wait and didn't want to go 15 blocks, etc. That's understood but hardly the bank's problem. I'm pretty sure BOA (or any other bank) doesn't guarantee you an ATM near you or that the ATM nearest you will be always be up and running. You didn't have money on you that you needed, so you relied on the nearest ATM; when it was down, you made a choice to use a non-BOA ATM, knowing (or you should have known) that there was a $2 charge made by the other bank and a $2 charge made by your bank for using a non-BOA ATM. That was your choice. If you knew that it was going to cost you $4, and did it anyway because you needed the money right then, then IMO that's your problem and your choice.

Maybe next time you should have money-on-hand to pay for regular expenses, or use an alternate payment method.

I respectfully disagree, poundwise. ajknox's circumstances should have no bearing in the situation. When it comes down to it, she attempted to use a service that BOA offered and it wasn't working. They should compensate for any inconvenience that she encountered because of their failure to provide functional equipment. But I do agree with you that BOA is a terrible bank.

I appreciate your tone and your position, however, I do disagree. When it comes down to it, the service is a convenience. That a particular machine in a particular location will be working/available 100% of the time is not guaranteed. Other BOA ATM machines were available.

How pressing the need to access cash (due their own circumstances) and/or how far a working ATM machine is are points that have no bearing in the situation IMO.

First to clarify, Im a he..
Now that I got that uncomfortable part out of the way (hehe), I wanted to respond to poundwise and gackle's comments. I definitely see that there is value to both sides as always. But I will be biased because this happened to me. I know this is not a legal claim (atleast a marketing jab),but they advertise that their ATMs are up 24/7/365.

Now I agree, that things happen. Systems go down etc. But that is their problem right? My reasoning is that why should I as a customer bear an expense on my part if they had a glitch. I had planned to goto the ATM before the guy came in so that I can pay. Now I had no inkling that the ATM would be down so I didnt plan for it and cushion time for that ( I plan out a lot of my stuff, but realistically, this was something I would not be thinking. lol).
Well, I know there is no right or wrong to this situation. My frustration boils from the fact that as a customer for 2yrs and hundreds of transactions later, they still dont value you as a customer and give you the respect you deserve. But thats the case with any large organization. My reason for the post was also to show other users who have had problems with BOA to keep persisting their queries. Afterall, the time i spent was minutes because everytime i would login to check my account, i would spend a minute to type the response. For $2, maybe its not worth it, but some folks who have had problems with overdraft fees etc, its worth a try.

As I said, I'm glad you got your $2 from BOA. That's never a bad thing IMO.
