  • New Goodwill near my home - 1 buck per POUND! :)

    woot woot!

I just discovered a new Goodwill store 1 mile from my house. Before, the closest one was about 15 miles away. Their prices were always too high for my tastes anyway so i never went. Our local thrift store is 1$ per piece of clothing so I always went there (I only buy name brand, ready to wear stuff too - abercrombie, american eagle, liz claiborn, banana republic, old navy, etc.).

Well, the new one just opened 2 days ago... its like a large warehouse and the clothes are in large bins on tables (kinda like a free for all). Theres no rhyme nor reason to the assortment of stuff - all sizes, styels and whatnot are bundled together and its a free for all digging excapade in there.

But get this - everything in only 1$ per pound!! TALK about thifty, right? whoohoo! You grab a rolling trash bin with a trash bag, fill it up then they weigh the bag. The clothes are very nice too (not junk like most thrift stores). I was so surprised! I picked up 16 pounds of clothes.. lol.. old navy / gap jeans, sweater sets, button up shifts, a cool pair of old navy plaid pants, pull over shirts, some capris, structure / AE / izod dress shirts for hubby, etc.

It makes me sick to think of paying 30$ in the original store for this american eagle shirt i have on right now - when I bought it for pennies. And it makes me even sicker to think I spent years doing just THAT before I discovered how to PROPERLY shot at thrift stores last year. None of the clothes have stains, rips, tears, holes - you can't tell they were used at all, cept for the softness that comes with laundering.

Does anyone else have a goodwill that prices items by the pound?? I had never heard of such. How exciting.. :-D

Coleroo, I have a by the pound Goodwill a couple of miles from my house too, and it is FABULOUS! It opened 2-3 years ago, and as long has you have the time to dig you can get some great deals. Especially on summer weight clothing, since it weighs so much less than the winter-weight counterparts.

The only bad thing is there is no dressing room in ours, so you can't try things on. Gotta have a good eye for things that will fit. Or, take the items and sell them for a quarter each a yard sale or the flea market and make a profit

That's a great deal. In fact, you might want to think about buying things at Goodwill and reselling them on ebay. The name brand stuff sells pretty well, particularly if you can put together lots of similar items.

LOL... I was just thinking about having a yard sell with the clothes a few hours ago! :-D

Ours didnt have a dressing room either, so I ended up with a few pairs of jeans that didnt quite buckle (*gasp* ...i blame it on bloating.. lol) but other than that everything else fits great. And yes, summer clothes are great! they weigh next to nothing.

yes thats a good idea i've tried selling on ebay before but it ended up in more fees than what i made... but with "by the pound" purchases, profits could be made much much more easily!

I'm jealous! Where my mom lives they have a Goodwill "Bins" where her and her art friends go. Well I moved to Florida and started to become more thrifty and the nearest oulet/bins is too far away to go to! So enjoy it!

When people start buying boatloads of clothings for cheap at thriftstores for eBaying and auction... soon thrift stores will jack up the price!

                      I'm jealous too.
I used to shop at Goodwill all the time but they raised the prices. I can find things on clearance at Sears or Kohls or Penneys for about what I'd pay at Goodwill.
I'd change my story if they were charging by the pound though.

We were at the Goodwill outlet yesterday and got a bunch of stuff. We picked up an American Touristsr garment bag for $6, a whole variety of items that came to 5 pounds, and 2 books which are 25 cents each (not by the pound). So $11.50 for everything.

I dont like trying on clothes so carry a tiny, retractable tape measure with important measurements from best fitting garments taped to the back of the plastic case. It's convenient to keep your 'to buy' list on your cell with applicable measurements.
