But if demand went down, that would definitely affect them. If you're not buying as much, they are not making the same as before. It's a doable thing but most people just aren't willing to make any kind of sacrifice.

Not buying gas on one specific day is pointless. It does not hurt the sales figures, it does not send a message, it does nothing. The gas you didn't buy on a "gas-out" day is the extra gas you bought the day before or the additional gas you'll buy on the day after.

If someone organized a substantial group of people who reduced their consumption by 20% for any given month, then you may have may something of an effective "protest."

To make a real difference, however, people need to commit to using less gas overall. Driving less, period, and/or using more fuel efficient vehicles, etc. will matter over time. Anything less is just busywork for the masses to feel good that they are "doing something" about gas prices; even when the reality is that they are not.

Me too, I didn't buy gas today because I didn't need gas today. I didn't even know about this being a no gas day. When I am not commuting to school I spend about $30 a month.

What I want to know is why the people who live the farthest away have the least fuel efficient vehicles? Mine gets 28mpg in city but the one who lives 30 miles away has a Jeep and the one that is 80 miles away drives a van.

What do you think will happen if nobody buys gas for a day?

And why does everybody want to punish the gas companies? Sure they profit, but there needs to be a profit in every industry to keep it going. If they are 'hurt', what will happen to gas prices? If the supply goes down, then the price goes up. If the demand goes up, then the price goes up. I'm doing my part by switching to a fuel efficient car & driving less. I'm happy that we don't have to pay the high prices that everyone in Europe has to pay, although it would be nice to not have so many SUV's on the road.

If you are tired of paying high gas prices, then stop using so much gas.

It is kind of silly to not buy gas on certain days. Can't wait until there is an electric car that comes out that I could buy.

The real effective thing I saw was during the oil embargoes and stuff. Not wanting to wait in long lines only to find out gas was gone, we just stayed home and only drove to work. Eventually, so many people did that that it made a difference. Demand went down and supplies went up. But it took time and a change of driving habits. Maybe the one day thing was to get people to think about changing their habits.

I agree. This doesn't happen overnight because you don't buy for one day. It has to be a process where you stop making so many unnecessary trips. On Sunday, my husband and I combined our trips to Home Depot. Normally, he would go in his work van and I would have gone another day. But, because we are minimizing our gas consumption, we carpooled.

I didn't buy gas because I still had over half a tank. I guess I participated - even though these gasouts do nothing.
