Please-those of you who turn your hot water heaters off, read this!!!

A little guy named Noah, from our church is currently in Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City MO fighting for his life. He is 6 years old.

His family are not members of our church, but he often attends with a neighbor boy whose family is. No one from church was aware that the family had their gas turned off for nonpay about 2 weeks ago. Thus, they have no hot water.

He has a bacterial infection, brought on by bad water from the hotwater heater. Apprently he was drinking tap water from the hot tap (even though it wasn't hot) and got sick. They announced this morning he is in critical condition. The city has tested the familys water, and found the bacteria problem to be in the tank, which is sealed. The incoming water supply from the city is fine, but it was breeding in the hot water heater. The city and hospital told the family bacteria is in all water, and will do this under the correct conditions. Bacteria is allowed in the water, as long is it is below so many parts per million, but if left at a certain temp, with no air flow or movement, it will begin to grow.

Our church is getting the families gas back on, getting them a new hot water heater and flushing their pipes as required by the county health department.

The family said they had money to pay either gas or electric, not both. The opted to pay the electric.

We do turn our hot water heater off and have for 30 years. However, it is turned on at least once a day. Also, we make our own bottled, distilled water for drinking.

Does filtering the water get rid of it?
