  • Suze Orman's Women & Money Reading Group - Question #2

QUESTION 2: Suze says women often have an "unknown factor," a stumbling block that prevents us from doing the right thing with our money. Can you identify some of these factors in your own life?

[scfr here, with further clarification for those who don't have the book. In the book, Suze gives the following examples of the "unknown factor": fear of the unknown, a rebellious streak, or embarrassment at having to ask for help]

    My response

    Two stumbling blocks:
    1. an overreliance on security: having had three men in a parental role before I was 21, and moving about eight times before I was 12, I didn't have a lot of stability. I'd rather pay the mortgage off faster and save money than engage in high risk - high return investment behaviour. And I'd rather demonstrate myself to be a fiscal conservative and worthy resource steward to keep high my value in my co-breadwinner's eyes.

    2. I am overwhelmed by the number of saving goals: all very noble, except maybe the vacation one, and all pricey, and all out of reach until the magic day my kid graduates from preschool. Too few dollars chasing too many goals gets me hamstrung.
