  • puzzled on the services offered.

hi, im Tina and I just want to ask you guys if who's the best known VoIP provider for giving the best service and make my calls really, really cheap. I recently moved out of my folk's house and I need to have a VoIP subscribed since they're place is from another state. Your views?

I've heard SunRocket is good, but I have no personal experience with them. They often have a deal for $199 you get 2 years of service.

Does it work on dial up? Or is there at least any VoIP system that works on a dial up?

It might be possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.

But I guess I'm confused because if you have a landline, why do you need VOIP? Maybe I didn't understand the original question.

tina, any typical voip sytem (i.e. vonnage, charter, etc) will require you to have high-speed internet in your home: they will not work properly over a dial-up connection. if they do work, the call quality is likely to be poor to unusable.

with that said, you might want to look into Gizmo – A free phone for your computer, a site that offers free calling from one PC to another (you use a microphone and speakers attached to your PC, not a regular phone unit). the unique part about gizmo is that they will apparently support PC to phone calling (meaning you use your computer to call someone on their land line or mobile line) for 1.9c per minute.

according to their knowledgebase, gizmo will also work over a dial-up connection

So that my calls would be cheaper. Imagine calling someone from CA while im from New York with my regular phone. now that would be expensive! that would be like 7cents per minute or more!

I found this site actually where i don't have to use my PC to call. it's voip.com. what happens is, I put my number and the number I need to call in the website then dial. They'll be the one to connect my calls. I actually tested it and I didn't have to download or do anything.

If you want to see the site, here it is:Voip - Free Calls - Everything Voip

I'm going to assume you don't work for voip.com...

You still need a high-speed internet connection, so I don't see how you've gained anything. Also according to the site you have to pay $20/month for the service. For around that much you can just add an unlimited long distance package to your landline phone, or you could use your cell phone with free long distance calls.

Has anyone tried Jajah? You initiate calls from their website by entering your phone number and the number of the person you want to call, and then your phone rings and connects you to that person. You don't need high speed internet because you will be using your regular phone. The rates are 2.8 cents a minute in US, and their international rates are very cheap, as well. The calls are totally free between Jajah users. More info here.

I think Jajah has actually the same service as voip.com. And I think this kind of service is much more suited for me. The only thing I can do now is check the price and QoS of both.

For land-line folks who are just looking for a low-rate plan for long-distance, I still recommend bigredwire. Low rates, simple, top-quality, and no hidden fees.

VoIP doesn't work over dial-up. VoIP also doesn't well over "lite" or basic broadband. Upload throughput matters a great deal.

SunRocket is ok. I don't think their service (voice quality) is as good as Vonage or CallVantage but is probably on-par or better than Packet-8 and others. You can't beat the price for unlimited calling. One thing to note, if you don't make a lot of calls, you can get Vonage's 500 minute plan for under $15 a month (before taxes and fees.)
