  • Advice on life after a divorce

I'm looking for some information for a relative who is going through a divorce. The assets have been split and the papers are signed. They still speak to each other, but it still was a hurtful situation. What kind of advice should we tell him about getting his papers, accounts, and life in order? We are going to tell him to close all accounts that were joint and open up new ones in just his name and be sure he changes the beneficiaries on his pension and any insurance policies. Does this sound reasonable?

He will also need to make a will (if he doesn't have one) most marrieds assume all the assets will just go to the spouse, depending on the state this may not be true and I think they should have one anyway but when single I think it is really important.

Car and House titles need to reflect the true ownership.

A power of attorney in case he is unable to handle his affairs.

I would also suggest a living will and health care proxy.

I am assuming there are no (dependent) kids involved.

You assume correctly. Their one child is an adult and lives away.

You could go to Nolo.com and click on "Family Law & Immigration" and look under divorce.
