  • Vonage?

    Hi everybody,

I am considering switching over to Vonage after much debate and analyzing bills. Currently, my roommate and I share the phone bill but I find that my average monthly payment is still around $42/month. That is too much if we are splitting a phone bill. I looked at the bill and its a fully-loaded deal (caller ID, voicemail, etc.) I tried to talk him out of the complete package since the bill is in his name, but he will not budge.

    My question is:

Do any of you use Vonage? I have heard many good and bad things about it. I could potentially be cutting my monthly phone expense in half if I sign up for it. Can anyone give me any good reasons to give it a try? Can anyone offer any reasons not to give it a try? Any information would be appreciated.

We use Vonage 24.99 a month, local and long distance (U.S.) with voicemail, love it, never had a problem. Our Vonage plan also has free long distance to Uk, which is great because I have a niece there. This is over 1/2 what Verizon was charging us...

Vonage is OK, and has 911 service, but honestly skype is much cheaper, and has all the same service except no 911 service.

I bought a skype phone for 29 dollars at walmart, and service for a year was under 50 dollars prepaid.

Its unlimited calling anywhere in the US incoming and outgoing.

The wife wanted to stick with Verizon and so we have. There were also some 911 issues with Vonage.

We've had Vonage for about a year now and are overall happy with it. The only thing with 911 is that you are supposed to give your address and phone number in case you get disconnected because I guess they can't trace it right now.

The biggest plus we see is the drastic cut in phone bill (we pay $14.99/mo for 500 minutes/mo) and NO stupid universal user fee charges or other crappy fees. You can check your voice mail online if you have speakers, can have calls automatically forwarded if there is a problem with the service (happens maybe once every 2 months, but it's just a matter of reseting the router), and can tell it to forward calls instantly as well. You can also have any area code of your choice.

Negatives we have experienced was the router they sent us at first was bad. I sent it back, was foolish to not certify the package, and they supposedly never received it. $99 down the drain. Also like I said earlier, there will be no dial tone about once every 2 months, but it's a matter of just unplugging the router for a few minutes then plugging it back in.
