  • The very picture of determination

Do you have any mental images that say "determination" to you? As of last night, I have a new such image.

There is a man whom I sometimes see riding a bike on some of the same streets I frequently drive, including the busier street mine intersects with. The first few times I saw him, I wondered about his situation, but quickly just learned to take his unusual appearance for granted. He is an unuual bike rider in that secured to the handle bars are a set of crutches. Of course I wondered what kind of problem the man has that he can ride a bike, but not walkk without the aid of crutches. I've seen him at points at least three miles apart, so the guy covers some ground, too.

Well, last night, after dark I saw him headed down the nearby busier street again. Only he was not pedaling. He was sitting on the seat, crutches tied to the handlebar as usual. He was propelling himself forward with just one leg, pushing off the ground then gliding, pushing off the ground then gliding, on and on. Whatever his disability, apparently last night it was not going to let him pedal. But that was not going to keep him from getting to where he needed to be.

What pictures of determination do you have?

    Great thread idea!

What a determined fellow in your story.

I always think of my Dad who does WHATEVER he sets his mind to no matter his present circumstances or health! The guy is a dynamo!

We had a guy who recently passed away that worked at the airport nearby. He was over 100. And went to work every day. I should remember him when I'm "tired" and feeling sorry for myself. What a great attitude!

          My favorite movie 'October Sky'

There is this boy and all his life he is told his dreams are too big. The thing is, it is his family and friends telling him this. Yet he keeps fighting and makes something better of his life. His success is probably 'average' by many people's view. Just a college education and a step up in life. However for him it was the accomplishment of a lifetime a stuggle for real life and a HUGE difference.

I think I like this movie so much because I always feel the people I am 'fighting' the most are my friends and family, those who 'should' be supporting me, not challenging me. Also I like that is not some unrealistic step....just fighting for a college education....not a Trump like fortune. Plus he's willing to work his butt of to get it, he's not looking for a free ride.

I like that movie....I think I need to watch it again.

Those stories are really inspiring to me too! That will totally be my dad, I figure he'll croak at work since he loves it so much.

It must've appeared curious that he could peda a bike but not walk.

I know of someone like that, who walks with a pronounced limp due to a gunshooting accident; however, he can pedal a bike quite well.

Will Smith. He was told he'd never make it as a singer/rap artist (especially as a rather verbally unoffensive one) but he made it big, pretty much set the standards for the good early rap (as opposed to the garbage put out today). Then they told him he couldn't be an actor on TV and he ended up with a decently long run with Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Then they said he'd never make it in the movies and now he gets $20 million per movie. Every time someone told him you can't, he said I can and he did. If he put his mind to it, I wouldn't doubt he'd get himself elected president. He doesn't give up when he wants something. He is my picture of determination.

Determination, I guess I think of my two adults I know. In spite of some poor parenting they have grown up to be incredible adults with wonderful families.
