I'm another one who wants to know what the "secret" is.
I kept seeing the commercials about the show that was going to reavel the secret, but I got busy and didn't tune in.
Please... someone share the "secret"

To be honest, I don't like Oprah. I think she's totally different
from what people think about her. She has great people personality
and that's what attracts the public which of course is good for the
show. However, I don't think she's as generous or as giving as others
tend to believe. The reason she is where she is it's because someone gave her a chance, and that could happen to anyone. I don't think she's a person to be looked up to. Just my opinion.

Even in the 80's, it seemed that women were the "guardian of morals." A guy could chase it and women would have some morals. Now, it's a culture of raunch. I am not sure what moms are teaching their daughters other than birth control.

So guys have free reign to "chase it" without censure but women have "fallen"?

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little there.

I watched the Oprah Secret show in its entirity. From what I garnered, it's about taking a positive approach to life, and exerting positive energy. If you do so, positive things will come back to you.

I agree with this philosophy and try to live my life in a similar fashion. However, "The Secret" and hype surrounding it leaves me feeling unsettled. You can check out the Secret web page at: http://thesecret.tv/, and judge for yourself, but watching the trailer reminded me of an attempt to make $$ off breeding the the DaVinci Code with a Self Help Guru.

Don't get me wrong. I love Oprah, and will continue to watch her and learn from her. I'll tune into her daily to get my boost of positivity and not waste $29.95 on the Secret DVD. In fact, thoughout the show Oprah kept saying things like "I've been living my whole life like this... I've been talking about stuff like this for years... I didn't know it was a Secret".

Old ideas... fancy new package, IMHO.

Get married and get your fair share and hooks into him, and vice-versa for that matter.

Boy, I sure am glad that my mother was married to the louse that fathered me so she could have her hooks in him. Without that $25 per week of child support, we might have had to depend on handouts from her parents to get by. Oh wait, we did have to do that.

Thanks for setting women's rights back about forty years. I always appreciate it when people think that, due to my gender, I am less capable of supporting myself than a man in similar circumstances.

Is it just me? I am not too worried about Oprah financially. LOL. In fact she may be better off not married - can keep more of her money - hehe.

Interestingly my mom's cousin just got taken to the cleaners in a divorce - his wife got everything - he gets nothing. His parents, in their 90s, are all up in arms he is shacking up with a new woman. We were just discussion yesterday who would want to get married again after going through such an awful divorce that left him in the poor house. If you don't have a good financial plan married or not terrible things happen. That reminds me I know plenty of men completely screwed over financially in divorce.

I actually cohabitated for 2 years with my husband before marriage and I was happy with that choice because he wasn't a total bastard leech. I Think it really comes down to being careful who you shack up with. I would like to think even if it came to a bitter divorce that we wouldn't take each other to the cleaners, that we would have a little more respect for each other, what we have contributed to where we are today, and we could realistically divide our assets and income without one of us getting completely screwed over. Because if you are with someone who has no regard for you whether you are married or not, you will not make out well when it ends. Yeah I know a lot of married women who were left in the lurch with small kids and no financial support. But what in the hell type of men did they marry in the first place?????? Not very nice ones, for sure. These men couldn't lift a finger to provide financial support for their children. FIne, they hate their ex-wive with a passion and want to see her have a miserable life. Who could do that to their children? IF my husband could that I am a terrible judge of character.

& one other thing, I decided to always be financially independent - I don't need no man - amen to that. LOL. MArried or shacking up or not you never have to be financially independent on someone. my husband and I both got college degrees and established careers before children - and if something were to happen we can both take care of ourselves just fine, regardless of who is home with the children. I think it is a ridiculous notion that someone home can not support themselves. You can sit home, raise children, and have no backup plan if things go sour, but not very smart. I know a lot of SAHMs who could support their family if push comes to shove. The difference in the ones who can and can't is primarily education. Go get an education and a backup plan before you have children because you will need a lot of money to raise them and it is not always a given your spouse will be there for the long haul - stuff happens.

God, that just gave me a great idea for a business - Divorce Insurance.

At the beginning of marriage, you take out a 7 year Divorce policy or as long of a term as you want. I hire some actuaries to compute some data and like a casino or insurance company does, charge 10% over.

In case of divorce, the policy will pay the woman (or man) $X.

God, I"ll make millions.

Think of it this way - you think I am evil - okay, I am, LOL. But this could really take off -

"You want to marry my daughter - well you are ponying up for a Divorce policy from Scanner Mutual Snakefarm Insurance Co.

I don't really care for Oprah, I think she is too judgemental. "I am Oprah, here is my opinion, I know best.....?"
I agree, the "Secret" thing is stupid. Its almost like a Tony Robbins thing where you make the best life through positive forces and thoughts, but this person wants you to "buy" this secret for MONEY and that is the only way you can find out??? I wonder if he was a Tony Robbins follower who decided to try to make his fortune this way?

Aside from all the marriage/shacking up talk, which could just spin on forever if we were all to write our thoughts (so I'm just going to let that discussion die), I don't really care too much for Oprah either. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's just something about her. The whole beef incident didn't help, since I am from a farming family and her casual comments did hurt the industry...but I digress. I think the whole reason she bothers me is everyone's willingness to completely follow her (which isn't necessarily her fault, but she does capitalize on it). She recommends a book - it's a best seller. She advertises something on her show - it sells out. I guess it just bothers me that people are so willing to do or buy something just because Oprah says so. What makes her such an expert on everything?

Well, while I semi-agree with your point, have you read any of the books she has recommended? Or tried any of the products she recommends? When you consistently make good recommendations, then people are going to be more likely to listen to you. That's just common sense. If I told you to go see a movie and you really liked it, you'd be more apt to listen to my suggestions in the future. If you hated it, you'd begin not trusting my opinion. We do it all the time with our friends, when we see something recommended by a magazine, etcetera. If you're going to hate on Oprah because of that, then you have to hate on absolutely EVERYONE, including family and friends, who have ever recommended ANYTHING to you. You have to be really secure with yourself to not listen to absolutely NO recommendations made by anyone, and I don't think there is anyone who has self-actualized to that point.

I also don't think you should blame Oprah for the fact that most people are sheep and do whatever they are told without thinking things through for themselves.

Like it or not, "the secret" is a brilliant marketing idea. Everybody likes a secret which has generated buzz, including a whole thread on some financial scrooge site. Most people know that being positive will take you further in life. If she tried to sell the show by stating exactly what it was about then she wouldn't have gotten quite the interest as she did. Telling people she had a "secret" piqued people's interest. With her show being on for so long now they've got to start thinking of different ideas for generating viewship.

When you consistently make good recommendations, then people are going to be more likely to listen to you. That's just common sense. This seems to be the premise behind such sites as digg. Theoretically, you're more likely to read an article that a lot of people "digg." Recently I read about the small group of people that others consistently follow. If X diggs an article, then many others will read it. You gotta wonder how these leaders achieved their status.
